Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Supervise and coordinate daily cargo receiving, sorting, staging, loading, unloading, and cross-dock operations to ensure timely movement of freight while meeting customer SLA and carrier cut-off times.
- Lead, coach and develop a frontline team of cargo handlers, forklift operators, and clerical staff — set clear performance expectations, conduct regular 1:1s, run shift briefings and complete performance reviews.
- Enforce and continuously monitor safety, health and environmental procedures (OSHA, DOT, IATA/IMDG guidelines as applicable), conduct safety audits, and facilitate incident investigations and corrective action plans to reduce accidents and near-misses.
- Maintain inventory accuracy via cycle counts, periodic full-counts, reconciliations and root-cause analysis for variances; implement corrective actions to minimize shrinkage and mispicks.
- Operate and administer the Warehouse Management System (WMS) and supporting tools (RF scanners, barcode systems); ensure accurate scanning, ASN/BOL matching, putaway, pick and ship confirmations.
- Plan and optimize shift schedules, labor forecasts and headcount allocation based on forecasted volumes, inbound/outbound appointments and peak periods to control labor cost and meet throughput targets.
- Oversee documentation and regulatory compliance for shipments including Bills of Lading (BOL), airway bills, customs paperwork, hazardous materials declarations, and carrier manifests; ensure accuracy and audit readiness.
- Coordinate inbound and outbound carrier relationships, manage carrier appointments, track shipments, escalate delays, and negotiate pickup/return logistics to reduce detention and demurrage exposure.
- Supervise the safe operation of powered industrial trucks and other material handling equipment; verify certifications and training records for forklift, reach truck and other heavy equipment operators.
- Manage loading and staging plans to maximize trailer/container utilization, minimize rehandles, and speed dock turnaround through effective slotting and pallet configuration strategies.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives such as 5S, Lean, standard work and Kaizen events to improve throughput, reduce cycle times and lower operating costs in the cargo area.
- Prepare, analyze and report weekly and monthly KPIs (on-time shipments, dock-to-stock cycle time, inventory accuracy, order fill rate, damage rate, labor productivity) and present insights to operations leadership.
- Oversee claims handling and damage control processes — document freight damage, coordinate root cause investigations with carriers and customers, and facilitate claim submissions.
- Implement and monitor quality control checkpoints for hazardous materials, temperature-controlled cargo, and high-value shipments to ensure regulatory compliance and product integrity.
- Manage vendor and third-party logistics (3PL) partners operating on-site; define expectations, monitor SLA adherence, and participate in supplier performance reviews.
- Ensure clean, organized and secure warehouse zones, oversee pest control and housekeeping schedules, and maintain emergency response plans and equipment.
- Lead onboarding, site-specific training, certifications and cross-training programs to build bench strength and promote internal mobility.
- Coordinate with customs brokers, freight forwarders and import/export teams to support clearance procedures, ISF filings, and hold/release workflows for international cargo.
- Maintain and improve inventory control documentation, SOPs, job aids and training manuals to ensure standardized processes and reduce knowledge loss.
- Troubleshoot complex operational issues in real-time (capacity constraints, equipment breakdowns, staffing gaps), make tactical decisions, and escalate to management with mitigation plans.
- Execute capacity planning for trailers, docks and storage allocation during seasonal peaks, promotions and major project rollouts.
- Manage cost-control initiatives including overtime reduction, waste reduction, and labor productivity improvements to meet budget targets.
- Act as a point of contact for internal customer escalations and client site visits; ensure high levels of service and customer satisfaction through timely communication and problem resolution.
Secondary Functions
- Participate in system upgrades, WMS implementations, and process mapping sessions to ensure operational requirements are captured and tested.
- Support audit readiness for external and internal audits (ISO, SOC, customs) by providing documentation, access and corrective action updates.
- Assist supply chain planning teams with inbound visibility, lead-time feedback and reconciliation of carrier performance for forecasting improvements.
- Facilitate cross-functional coordination with procurement, quality assurance, transportation and sales to resolve order exceptions and special handling requests.
- Maintain training matrices and certification records; schedule refresher training for PPE, HAZMAT handling, forklift operation and emergency procedures.
- Lead small project teams for layout changes, dock reconfiguration or capacity expansion; manage timelines, resources and post-implementation reviews.
- Drive sustainability and waste reduction efforts such as pallet reuse programs, packaging optimization and recycling initiatives.
- Support seasonal hiring campaigns and temp labor sourcing; coordinate onboarding to ensure rapid productivity ramp-up.
- Document lessons learned after incidents and process changes and convert them into SOP updates and staff briefings.
