The Category Manager is responsible for developing and executing the end-to-end commercial strategy for one or more product categories to maximize sales, margin, and market share. Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Develop and implement a comprehensive category strategy that aligns with company objectives, driving top-line sales, margin expansion, and improved turn through targeted assortment, pricing and promotional plans.
- Own the full P&L for assigned categories: create annual budgets, set sales and margin targets, track performance against plan, and implement corrective actions to achieve financial goals.
- Conduct deep-dive shopper and market analysis to identify white-space opportunities, customer needs, seasonal trends, and competitive threats; translate insights into tangible assortment and marketing recommendations.
- Build and maintain strategic supplier partnerships: negotiate commercial terms, secure exclusive ranges, manage shelf space and online placement, and coordinate joint business planning to drive mutual growth.
- Lead end-to-end assortment planning including range architecture, SKU rationalization, lifecycle management, and product introductions to optimize space and online navigation for conversion.
- Set dynamic pricing strategies using competitive benchmarking, elasticity analysis, and margin targets; recommend markdowns and full-price promotions to maximize sell-through and reduce markdown risk.
- Design and manage promotional calendars in collaboration with Marketing and Merchandising to maximize ROI, prevent cannibalization, and ensure consistent brand messaging across channels.
- Collaborate with Supply Chain and Inventory teams to ensure optimal inventory levels, minimize out-of-stocks and overstocks, and support replenishment and allocation strategies that meet demand forecasts.
- Leverage commercial analytics and BI tools to create forecasts, run scenario planning, measure promotional effectiveness, and deliver actionable recommendations to senior stakeholders.
- Lead cross-functional projects to improve category performance including planogram optimization, online merchandising enhancements (category pages, filters, and search), and conversion uplift initiatives.
- Own product lifecycle management: drive timely introductions, monitor product performance, take timely decisions on delisting, and manage changeovers with minimal customer disruption.
- Manage and mentor junior category team members, providing coaching on negotiation, commercial analysis, supplier relationship management, and category strategy execution.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, contractual terms, pricing guidelines, and legal/regulatory requirements relevant to product labeling, promotions, and supplier agreements.
- Define and monitor KPIs such as sales, margin, GMROI, inventory days, sell-through rates, and customer conversion to continuously improve category health.
- Prepare and present monthly and quarterly business reviews to senior leadership, highlighting performance, opportunities, risks, and recommended action plans.
- Partner with Digital and UX teams to optimize online category presentation, merchandising rules, and search relevance to improve discoverability and conversion for key products.
- Drive sustainability and private-label initiatives within the category by working with suppliers to improve product sourcing, packaging, and cost-to-serve while meeting customer expectations.
- Implement continuous improvement initiatives such as A/B testing of merchandising, promotional mechanics, or pricing to systematically lift category performance.
- Coordinate with Legal and Finance on contract reviews, rebate management, and supplier performance scorecards to ensure accurate commercial reporting and claims.
- Manage seasonal planning and promotional event readiness (e.g., Black Friday, holiday, back-to-school) ensuring inventory, marketing, and logistics are aligned to capture peak demand.
- Conduct competitor benchmarking and market scans to ensure the category remains price-competitive, trend-relevant, and differentiated in assortment.
- Support national and regional store teams with localized assortment and promotional recommendations tailored to specific customer demographics and store formats.
- Lead supplier onboarding for new products including negotiating terms, setting launch plans, defining targets, and tracking launch KPIs to ensure a successful market entry.
- Execute price-pack architecture and SKU rationalization programs to reduce complexity, improve margins, and simplify customer choice.
Secondary Functions
- Support ad-hoc cross-functional initiatives such as loyalty program activations, private-label development, and omnichannel fulfillment pilots.
- Provide input to merchandising and store operations on planogram changes and in-store promotional setups to improve shelf effectiveness.
