Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate a Class A tractor-trailer safely and efficiently over assigned local, regional, or OTR routes while adhering to all FMCSA, DOT and company hours-of-service (HOS) regulations and policies.
  • Conduct thorough pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip vehicle inspections, accurately documenting defects, reporting safety or mechanical issues to maintenance or dispatch, and ensuring timely follow-up repairs.
  • Load, unload, and secure freight using proper cargo securement techniques (strapping, blocking, bracing, load distribution) to prevent movement, damage, or safety hazards during transit.
  • Maintain accurate and timely driver logs using mandated electronic logging devices (ELDs/eLogs) or paper logs when required; ensure compliance with record-keeping and HOS audits.
  • Plan and execute efficient routes leveraging GPS, ELD routing tools, and communication with dispatch to optimize on-time performance and fuel efficiency while avoiding restricted roads and low-clearance routes.
  • Communicate proactively with dispatch, operations, and customers regarding pickup and delivery windows, delays, route changes, and special handling instructions to preserve service level agreements.
  • Deliver freight to residential, commercial, and distribution center locations while handling customer interactions professionally and following company delivery standards and proof-of-delivery (POD) procedures.
  • Perform basic vehicle maintenance such as topping off fluids, checking tire pressure and condition, changing lights and fuses as needed, and completing daily maintenance checklists to extend vehicle lifecycle.
  • Comply with all hazardous materials (HazMat), tanker, or other specialized endorsements and handling procedures when transporting regulated materials, including placarding and emergency response readiness.
  • Secure and inspect tarps, straps, and other protective equipment on flatbeds, step-decks, and open trailers to protect freight from weather and road conditions.
  • Follow company safety protocols for backing, coupling/uncoupling trailers, and operating under adverse weather or road conditions, minimizing risk of incidents and cargo loss.
  • Perform cross-docking, staging, and basic pallet handling when required at terminals, using manual methods or powered equipment consistent with training and certifications.
  • Participate in safety meetings, compliance training, and certification renewal processes; actively contribute to the company’s safety culture and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Accurately complete all required shipping and receiving paperwork, bills of lading, delivery receipts, and other freight documentation while maintaining confidentiality and data integrity.
  • Uphold fuel and expense reporting procedures, submit receipts and logs in a timely manner, and follow company fuel-saving best practices to manage operational costs.
  • Assist with load planning and weight distribution assessments to ensure legal axle weights and trailer stability, coordinating with loaders or yard personnel as needed.
  • Respond to roadside inspections and law enforcement interactions professionally, providing requested documentation and following company protocols for incident reporting.
  • Mentor new or junior drivers by demonstrating safe operating practices, route knowledge, company procedures, and proper logkeeping to raise overall fleet competency.
  • Use mobile communications, dispatch apps, and integrated telematics for real-time location updates, route adjustments, and incident reporting; maintain device readiness and connectivity.
  • Meet or exceed on-time delivery targets and key performance indicators (KPIs) while balancing safety, compliance, and customer service expectations.
  • Ensure cleanliness and professional appearance of vehicle interiors and exteriors; present a professional image at customer sites and company facilities.
  • Participate in scheduled home-time commitments or dedicated route schedules per company policy; adjust to varying shift patterns including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist terminal staff with yard organization, trailer spotting, and staging to improve loading efficiency and reduce dwell times.
  • Support asset recovery and cargo discrepancy investigations by providing detailed trip notes, photos, and timeline reports to operations and claims teams.
  • Help evaluate and pilot telematics, safety cameras, and in-cab technology programs by providing driver feedback to fleet managers for adoption and improvement.
  • Assist in cross-training for intermodal, LTL (less-than-truckload), or drop-and-hook operations to increase operational flexibility across the fleet.
  • Participate in community or customer-facing events representing the company’s safety-first values and supporting recruitment and retention efforts.
  • Provide constructive feedback on route planning, fueling stops, and rest area selections to reduce operational friction and improve driver experience.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Valid Class A CDL license in good standing with relevant state endorsements (e.g., HAZMAT, Tanker, Double/Triple, Air Brakes) where applicable.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of FMCSA and DOT regulations, hours-of-service (HOS) rules, and electronic logging device (ELD) requirements.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent work experience as a commercial driver accepted.
