  • Assemble surgical trays and procedure kits according to standardized tray lists and surgeon preferences; wrap packs and seal pouches using validated wrapping techniques, ensuring correct load configuration and proper labeling with sterilization date, expiration/sterility indicator, lot and operator ID.
  • Perform biological indicator (BI), chemical indicator (CI), and Bowie-Dick testing according to schedule and regulatory requirements; document results and initiate corrective action and root cause investigation for failed tests.
  • Maintain accurate sterilization and processing documentation, including logbooks, electronic sterilizer records, load tracking, and instrument traceability for implants and high-risk procedures (UDI/barcode scanning).
  • Prioritize and triage urgent case needs, provide rapid turnaround for STAT instrument requests, and coordinate same-day instrument delivery to the operating room, interventional radiology and outpatient procedure areas.
  • Reprocess flexible endoscopes and complex endoscopic accessories following manufacturer IFUs and facility policies; perform leak testing, manual cleaning, automated endoscope reprocessor (AER) cycles, and high-level disinfection verification.
  • Monitor and maintain chemical solution concentrations (detergents, enzymatic cleaners, disinfectants) using test strips or electronic testers; change solutions on schedule and document maintenance.
  • Maintain sterile storage areas and stock rotation (first-in, first-out), check expiration dates, and ensure sterile barrier integrity in sterile storage, sterile cabinets and case carts.
  • Use instrument tracking systems, barcoding or RFID technology to track instrument sets, implants and consumables between departments, ensuring full traceability and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in infection prevention and quality assurance activities: assist with audits, competency assessments, policy updates, and implement corrective actions to reduce SSI risk and compliance gaps.
  • Adhere to universal precautions, proper PPE use, sharps handling and regulated medical waste segregation; report exposures and participate in post-exposure follow-up per facility protocol.
  • Perform daily, weekly and monthly sterilizer and equipment maintenance checks, including cleaning gaskets, chambers, and verifying cycle parameters; escalate equipment failures to biomedical engineering and document service events.
  • Maintain instrument and tray inventory: restock sterile supplies, order consumables, and manage par levels to ensure uninterrupted service delivery to perioperative and procedural areas.
  • Train and mentor new SPD staff and cross-train OR and clinic personnel on basic instrument handling, case cart setup and sterile storage practices to improve coordination between departments.
  • Respond appropriately during recall events for implants or instrument sets: locate affected items, quarantine, document, and notify clinical teams and supply chain as required.
  • Ensure implant and high-value device management meets implant traceability laws and facility policies: verify implant labeling, document lot numbers and serial numbers into electronic medical records or tracking systems at point-of-care.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, safety huddles and quality improvement projects to streamline workflow, reduce instrument turn-around-times and improve case readiness metrics.
  • Maintain confidentiality and accuracy in all documentation, participate in mock surveys and prepare required documentation for The Joint Commission, DNV, or other external regulatory inspections.
  • Follow and enforce manufacturer’s instructions for use (IFU) for surgical instruments, devices, and sterilization packaging to ensure compliance with national standards (AAMI, CDC, ANSI).
  • Perform thorough cleaning and reprocessing of robotic surgical instruments and specialty instrumentation following vendor-specific protocols, including manual cleaning of lumens and articulation points.
  • Support inventory management systems by receiving, inspecting and entering sterile supplies, implants and instrumentation into the stock system; coordinate with materials management for replenishment and shortage mitigation.
  • Assist with department performance reporting by collecting processing metrics (turnaround time, throughput, sterilizer utilization, failed indicators) and providing data for continuous improvement initiatives.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with preparing documentation and data for regulatory surveys and internal audits; update SOPs and competency checklists based on audit findings and best practices.
  • Contribute to department continuous improvement projects: workflow optimization, lean initiatives, and root cause analysis of reprocessing errors.
  • Cross-train in related sterile processing roles (inventory control, instrument repair coordination, sterile storage management) to increase departmental resiliency.
  • Support vendor relationships by coordinating validation studies, new instrument introductions, and staff training on vendor-specific IFUs.
  • Participate in education sessions for clinical staff on sterile supply handling, implant traceability, and case cart management to reduce intraoperative delays.
  • Help maintain a clean, safe and organized sterile processing environment by performing basic housekeeping, inventory rotation and restocking duties.
  • Assist with ad-hoc reporting requests: daily case cart status, sterilizer utilization, and shortage reports to support OR scheduling and supply chain decisions.
  • Help evaluate and pilot new sterilization technologies, packaging materials and instrument tracking software; provide frontline feedback for purchasing decisions.
  • Support environmental monitoring activities in sterile storage and processing areas (temperature/humidity logs) and report deviations to management.
  • Provide backup coverage for receiving docks, central supply distribution or other perioperative logistics functions during staffing shortages.
