Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive vehicle diagnostics using OEM-level scan tools and multimeters to identify root causes of drivability, engine, transmission, ABS/SRS, and electrical faults; generate clear findings and repair recommendations for service advisors and customers.
  • Execute complex engine repairs and rebuilds including cylinder head work, timing systems, fuel systems, turbochargers, and emission control components following manufacturer service procedures and torque specifications.
  • Diagnose, service, and rebuild automatic and manual transmissions, transfer cases, and driveline components; perform fluid flushes, clutch replacement, seal and bearing replacement, and road-test validations.
  • Troubleshoot and repair vehicle electrical systems, wiring harnesses, modules (ECU/TCU/BCM), starting/charging systems, sensors and actuators using wiring diagrams and technical service bulletins (TSBs).
  • Perform brake system diagnostics and repairs including hydraulic systems, ABS module diagnostics and replacement, rotor and pad machining or replacement, parking brakes, and electronic parking systems.
  • Inspect and repair suspension and steering systems: alignments, control arms, tie rods, struts/shocks, wheel bearings, power steering pumps, racks, and electronic steering assist systems.
  • Service HVAC systems: diagnose heating and A/C faults, perform refrigerant recovery and recharging (EPA 609 compliant), replace compressors, expanders, and blend doors; verify climate control function.
  • Carry out ADAS calibration and recalibration (radar, camera, lidar-based systems) after windshield replacement, sensor replacement, or suspension/steering adjustments using OEM procedures and calibration rigs.
  • Conduct full vehicle inspections for safety, emissions, and pre-sale or post-accident assessments; document findings, recommend repairs, and estimate parts and labor with accuracy.
  • Use OEM repair information, technical bulletins, and diagnostic flow charts to produce consistent, warranty-eligible repairs and to reduce comebacks; apply software updates and calibration files where required.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance services (oil changes, multi-point inspections, fluid services, tune-ups, timing belt/chain replacement) adhering to factory-recommended intervals and service specifications.
  • Install mechanical and electrical accessories, retrofit components, and perform aftermarket system integrations while ensuring compatibility with OEM electronics and maintaining warranty status when applicable.
  • Conduct road tests and post-repair verification checks to validate repairs under varied driving conditions; document test results and ensure customer satisfaction before vehicle release.
  • Order and manage parts for repairs, verify parts fitment, receive deliveries, and coordinate special-order or back-ordered items with parts department and customers.
  • Prepare accurate repair orders, detailed labor time entries, diagnostic notes, and parts documentation in the shop management and CRM systems; close jobs with clear work descriptions and follow-up recommendations.
  • Manage warranty and goodwill claim documentation; prepare technical reports, support service advisor submissions, and follow up with manufacturer or parts supplier when required.
  • Maintain shop equipment, diagnostic tools, lifts, and calibration devices; perform routine preventive maintenance and ensure tools are calibrated and compliant with industry standards.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, and regulatory standards (EPA, OSHA, DOT) including proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials, refrigerants, and used fluids.
  • Mentor and train junior technicians and apprentices in diagnostic techniques, OEM procedures, safe practices, and efficient work habits while promoting continuous learning and certification progress.
  • Communicate directly with customers and service advisors to explain complex technical issues in plain language, provide repair timelines and cost estimates, and set realistic expectations for outcomes.
  • Collaborate with collision, body, and paint technicians to coordinate repairs that involve structural or multi-shop workflows; ensure seamless handoffs and unified repair strategies.
  • Utilize computerized service manuals, online parts catalogs, and diagnostic subscriptions to research uncommon failure modes and engineering change notices for legacy and current model vehicles.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area, enforce shop housekeeping standards, and contribute to efficient bay scheduling to support overall shop productivity and customer throughput.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with inventory counts, parts stock rotation, and identification of slow-moving SKUs to help minimize delays and parts shortages.
  • Support service advisors by preparing customer-facing repair explanations, repair photos, and video walk-throughs to improve transparency and customer trust.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, shop performance reviews, and technician scorecards to identify training and process optimization opportunities.
  • Provide technical input for seasonal service promotions, maintenance packages, and service menus to increase revenue and customer retention.
  • Help manage loaner or fleet vehicles, perform pre-checks and return inspections, and maintain service records for corporate or fleet accounts.
  • Aid in the onboarding of new technicians by assisting with shop orientation, safety briefings, and OEM tool familiarization.

  • Support recall campaigns by performing recall-related inspections and repairs, documenting compliance, and ensuring proper completion of software updates.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED required; vocational training or certificate in Automotive Technology preferred.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate degree in Automotive Technology, Automotive Service Technology, or related mechanical field.
  • Manufacturer-specific training (BMW, Ford, Toyota, GM, Mercedes, etc.) or completion of accredited technician training programs.
