Primary Functions

- Take, pour, trim and articulate dental impressions, models and preliminary impressions for study models or lab work, and coordinate shipping and tracking of lab cases (crowns, bridges, dentures, night guards).
- Mix, deliver and assist with dental materials including composite resins, glass ionomers, impression materials, temporary cements, and bonding agents, following manufacturer instructions and material safety data.
- Apply isolation techniques (rubber dam placement, cotton roll isolation, suction management) and maintain moisture control to facilitate quality restorative and endodontic outcomes.
- Monitor and document patient vitals, medical histories, and preoperative assessments; identify and escalate medical or anesthetic concerns to the dentist promptly.
- Administer topical anesthetic and assist with local anesthesia procedures under the supervising dentist’s direction; monitor patients when nitrous oxide sedation is used per state regulations and practice protocols.
- Perform coronal polishing, sealant placement, fluoride applications, and preventive education within the scope of certification and applicable state regulations.
- Prepare and maintain digital patient records and charts in practice management software (Dentrix, Eaglesoft, Open Dental), ensuring accurate treatment notes, radiograph uploads, and clinical documentation to support billing and continuity of care.
- Educate patients on post-operative care, oral hygiene, home maintenance after procedures, and follow-up instructions in a clear, empathetic manner; provide written instructions and reinforce compliance.
- Triage and manage emergency dental situations (dental trauma, acute infections, bleeding) by providing immediate chairside care, applying temporary measures, and coordinating urgent follow-up with the dentist.
- Verify patient insurance eligibility and benefits prior to treatment, prepare pre-authorizations as needed, and assist front-office staff with treatment plan estimates and patient financial discussions.
- Assist with lab communication—submit precise prescriptions, communicate shade and margin details, inspect returned prosthetics for quality, and coordinate remakes or adjustments with dental laboratories.
- Maintain operatory supplies and inventory levels, perform regular ordering and reconciliation of clinical supplies, dental materials, and PPE to minimize downtime and control costs.
- Participate in patient scheduling and treatment sequencing to optimize daily productivity while preserving a high standard of patient care and minimizing wait times.
- Conduct routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting for dental equipment (curing lights, handpieces, compressors, X-ray units) and escalate technical issues to equipment service providers as needed.
- Comply with HIPAA privacy standards, maintain patient confidentiality, and manage secure transmission of medical records and radiographs.
