Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assemble CNC machine frames, axis modules, and subassemblies from engineering drawings and BOMs, ensuring correct fit, orientation and sequence of assembly to meet dimensional and functional specifications.
  • Install and align linear guides, ball screws, rotary bearings, lead screws, and other precision motion components using precision measuring tools (micrometers, dial indicators, laser alignment tools) to achieve specified flatness and runout tolerances.
  • Mount and wire servo motors, stepper motors, encoders, spindle drives, and motor feedback devices; route harnesses and cable carriers to maintain EMI protection and serviceability.
  • Perform electrical integration: install control cabinets, power distribution, terminal blocks, PLCs, drives and human-machine interfaces (HMIs) per wiring schematics and IPC/UL practices.
  • Read and interpret mechanical drawings, wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, pneumatic/hydraulic diagrams and CAD models to confirm parts, orientations, and interconnections.
  • Configure and commission motion systems and drives, tune servo parameters, establish home/limit switches, and validate axis travel, velocity and acceleration profiles against design criteria.
  • Perform spindle assembly, balancing and runout checks, install toolholding systems, and conduct rotational speed verification with tachometers and vibration meters.
  • Execute first article inspection (FAI) and in-process inspections, record measured values, compare to tolerances, and generate inspection reports or non-conformance documentation when required.
  • Perform functional testing of machine subsystems (axis motion, tool change, coolant, pneumatics) and full machine cycle tests to verify repeatability, accuracy and safety interlocks.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical faults using systematic diagnostics, oscilloscopes, multimeters, megohmmeters and software diagnostic tools; implement corrective actions and preventive solutions.
  • Calibrate linear scales, encoders and feedback loops; verify positional accuracy across travel and document compensation values in control software.
  • Install and test pneumatic and hydraulic subsystems, including valves, regulators, actuators and air/water lines; perform leak tests and pressure checks to meet operational specifications.
  • Assemble and adjust fixture tooling, jigs and custom tooling interfaces for production readiness; collaborate with manufacturing engineers to optimize assembly for serviceability and throughput.
  • Apply precise torque values to fasteners, verify thread engagement and locking methods (Loctite, lock washers) to ensure long-term mechanical integrity.
  • Maintain accurate assembly build records, routings and serial number traceability in ERP/MES systems; attach serial plates and update configuration records.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and refurbishment tasks on returned machines or demo units, replacing wear items and restoring to OEM tolerances.
  • Implement and follow company and regulatory safety standards (lockout/tagout, PPE, electrical safety) during assembly, testing and field commissioning.
  • Collaborate with design and quality engineering to provide feedback on manufacturability, assembly issues, and recommended design changes to improve serviceability and reduce build time.
  • Participate in FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) preparation and execution; support customer demonstrations and address field feedback during acceptance runs.
  • Train junior assemblers and apprentices on best practices in mechanical assembly, wiring, calibration and safety; provide clear work instructions and hands-on mentorship.
  • Prepare machines for shipment: secure moving parts, cap hydraulics, set shipping locks, prepare packing lists, and coordinate with logistics for crating and transport.
  • Support on-site installations and field service as required, performing final leveling, electrical hook-up, network integration and process tuning at customer sites.
  • Maintain shop cleanliness, tool calibration status, and manage spare parts inventory to ensure uninterrupted assembly flow and rapid response for repairs.

Secondary Functions

  • Create and maintain detailed assembly work instructions, process checklists and test protocols to standardize builds and reduce rework.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by collecting assembly time, failure modes, and quality metrics; propose and test countermeasures to reduce defects and cycle time.
  • Coordinate with procurement and warehouse on component availability, lead-times and quality issues to prevent assembly delays.
  • Assist engineering with prototype builds, design verification testing, and documentation of design-to-production transitions.
  • Participate in continuous learning programs to stay current with CNC control platforms, servo technologies, and industry best practices.
  • Provide technical input for warranty claims investigations by documenting root cause analysis and recommended remedial actions.
  • Support cross-functional teams (quality, purchasing, manufacturing engineering) during product launches to align on build readiness and quality gates.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Strong mechanical assembly skills: familiarity with precision fixtures, bearings, shafts, linear guides, ballscrews and tolerancing to ±0.001" or better.
  • Electrical wiring and controls experience: reading wiring diagrams, terminating wires, cable management, and basic PLC/HMI wiring.
  • Motion control and servo system know-how: ability to install, parameterize and tune servo drives and encoder feedback systems.
  • Proficient with precision measurement instruments: micrometers, calipers, height gauges, dial indicators, runout gauges and laser alignment tools.
  • Mechanical alignment and calibration: tramming spindles, squaring axes, leveling machine frames and compensating for thermal effects.
  • Troubleshooting and diagnostics: use of multimeters, oscilloscopes and hand tools to isolate mechanical and electrical faults.
  • Experience with CNC control platforms (Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain, Mitsubishi, or similar) and basic G-code understanding for test cycles.
  • Familiarity with PLC programming concepts and ladder logic for diagnostic purposes (reading basic programs to verify IO).
  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings, BOMs, CAD prints, and GD&T fundamentals.
  • Knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic components, flow controls, and pressure testing.
  • Soldering, crimping and connector assembly skills for control harnesses and sensor terminations.
  • Use of hand and power tools safely and effectively; bench assembly, press fits, and light machining for fit-up adjustments.
  • Basic computer skills: ERP/MES data entry, test data logging, and version-controlled documentation.
  • Experience with ISO quality systems and FAI procedures preferred.
  • Familiarity with safety standards (NFPA, OSHA, Lockout/Tagout) and electrical safety practices.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED; technical certificate in CNC, mechatronics, electromechanical, or related field preferred.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Mechatronics, Electro-Mechanical Technology, or similar.
  • Certifications in PLC, robotics, or CNC systems are a plus.
