Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Lead, coach and mentor a team of maintenance technicians to ensure rapid, accurate diagnosis and repair of CNC machining centers, turning centers, milling machines, grinders, and automated loading/unloading systems while maintaining high standards for safety and quality.
- Develop, implement and own a comprehensive preventive maintenance (PM) program for CNC equipment, including daily, weekly and monthly checklists, lubrication schedules, spindle and axis checks, and documented PM procedures to maximize mean time between failures (MTBF).
- Troubleshoot complex electrical, mechanical and control problems on CNC equipment—diagnosing issues with drives, servomotors, encoders, feedback systems, ball screws, linear guides, spindles and tool changers—and execute corrective actions to restore production quickly.
- Program, troubleshoot and maintain PLCs and machine controls (Fanuc, Siemens, Haas, Mitsubishi, Allen‑Bradley) including I/O diagnostics, ladder logic review, and coordinating software/firmware updates with engineering.
- Implement predictive maintenance technologies such as vibration analysis, thermal imaging, oil analysis and motor current signature analysis; interpret data to schedule repairs before catastrophic failures and to extend component life.
- Lead root cause analysis (RCA) and formal problem‑solving exercises (5 Whys, Fishbone, PDCA) for recurring machine failures, document findings, and drive corrective and preventive actions across maintenance and production teams.
- Manage electrical and mechanical upgrades and retrofits to improve machine reliability, safety and cycle times—coordinate design, procurement and installation of servo upgrades, spindle rebuilds, new PLC panels, and HMI replacements.
- Establish and manage spare parts inventory strategies (critical spares, consignment, reorder points) to minimize downtime while controlling inventory carrying costs; negotiate with vendors for lead times and cost savings.
- Create and maintain accurate machine documentation—schematics, electrical drawings, BOMs, PM logs, calibration records and service histories—and ensure technicians follow standardized work instructions.
- Coordinate with production planners and supervisors to schedule machine maintenance and planned outages to minimize impact on production schedules, including night and weekend maintenance campaigns.
- Oversee installation, startup and qualification of new CNC equipment and automation cells, including FAT/SAT support, calibration, tool offsets, and development of machine-specific PM plans prior to production handover.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations (OSHA, lockout/tagout, NFPA 70E) and company safety standards; enforce PPE, safe mechanical/electrical practices and regularly conduct safety audits and toolbox talks.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to reduce machine downtime and improve mean time to repair (MTTR), applying lean manufacturing and TPM methodologies to streamline maintenance workflows and eliminate waste.
- Provide technical support to production during changeovers, first‑part runs and process troubleshooting to ensure machines meet quality and cycle‑time targets; refine machine setups and fixtures as needed.
- Supervise external service vendors and OEM technicians—define scope of work, evaluate proposals, validate repairs, and ensure warranty and service contracts provide expected uptime value.
- Train and develop maintenance staff competence with formal and on‑the‑job training programs covering CNC controls, hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical safety, servo tuning and alignment procedures.
- Monitor maintenance KPIs (MTTR, MTBF, uptime %, planned maintenance compliance, backlog) and prepare weekly/monthly performance reports for plant leadership with action plans for improvement.
- Manage maintenance labor scheduling, overtime approvals, timekeeping accuracy and resource allocation to meet production and maintenance priorities while controlling cost.
- Participate in capital budgeting for maintenance projects—prepare cost/benefit analyses, prioritize reliability improvement investments and track capital project execution to deliver ROI.
- Maintain environmental, health and safety records and ensure all work complies with ISO, AS9100 (if applicable), and internal quality standards; participate in audits and corrective action implementation.
- Support quality investigations related to machine performance (surface finish, dimensional issues, tool life) and collaborate with tooling/process engineers to implement machine adjustments, fixture improvements or control parameter changes.
- Develop and implement contingency and disaster recovery plans for critical equipment failures, including cross-training plans and rapid response teams to restore key processes.
