Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Supervise, coach and develop a team of CNC operators, setup technicians and programmers; assign daily workloads, monitor productivity, and conduct regular performance reviews to meet production targets.
- Plan and coordinate shift schedules, machine loading and operator assignments to ensure on-time delivery and balanced utilization of CNC centers.
- Review and validate CNC programs (G-code) and tool lists before production; collaborate with programmers to optimize cycle times and material usage.
- Approve and oversee part setups, tooling selection, fixturing, and runoffs; ensure first-article inspections and initial sample verification meet engineering specifications.
- Interpret engineering drawings and GD&T requirements; ensure operators consistently follow work instructions, routings, and control plans.
- Implement and maintain quality control processes including in-process inspection, SPC data collection, CMM measurement routines, and containment for nonconforming parts.
- Lead root cause analysis (5 Whys, Fishbone) and corrective action processes for recurring quality or production issues; document findings and preventive controls.
- Maintain machine capability studies and process capability (Cp/Cpk) metrics; work to continuously improve process stability and reduce variation.
- Drive lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives (Kaizen events, 5S, SMED) to reduce setup times, eliminate waste and improve throughput.
- Oversee preventive maintenance schedules and coordinate with maintenance technicians to minimize unplanned downtime and maintain spindle, servo, and coolant system health.
- Manage tooling and consumables inventory, order critical tools, monitor tool life, and implement tool-management strategies to control costs.
- Enforce safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, and environmental regulations; conduct safety meetings, training, and incident investigations as needed.
- Maintain accurate production documentation including job travelers, router cards, inspection records, SPC charts, and electronic manufacturing records in the ERP/MRP system.
- Collaborate with engineering and process development to qualify new parts, scale production, and address manufacturability improvements (DFM feedback).
- Monitor shop floor KPIs such as OEE, yield, scrap rate, on-time delivery, and labor efficiency; prepare and present performance reports to management.
- Train new hires and upskill existing staff on CNC best practices, machine controls (Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain), and CAD/CAM fundamentals (Mastercam, Fusion 360, SolidWorks).
- Approve and control process changes, work with quality to update PFMEA, control plans, and SOPs when new tools, programs or materials are introduced.
- Coordinate with purchasing and vendors for outside services (heat treat, plating, subcontract machining) and evaluate external supplier performance.
- Respond to customer quality concerns, support supplier audits, and assist sales/engineering in technical reviews or emergency production needs.
- Manage labor and overtime budgets for assigned area; recommend staffing adjustments and capital investments to meet production demand and cost targets.
- Ensure compliance with ISO 9001 / AS9100 (where applicable) documentation requirements and participate in internal and external quality audits.
- Troubleshoot complex machining issues including chatter, tool breakage, dimensional drift and surface finish problems; implement corrective machining parameters and tooling solutions.
- Lead changeover and process optimization projects, documenting standard work, and implementing visual management on the shop floor to increase predictability.
Secondary Functions
- Support cross-functional projects (NPI, prototype runs) by allocating shop resources and advising on machining strategies.
- Mentor and develop a succession pipeline for operator and lead positions; coordinate technical training programs with HR and external trainers.
- Assist in capital equipment evaluations by providing shop-floor input on ROI, throughput improvements and tooling requirements.
- Participate in continuous improvement steering committees and contribute data-driven recommendations for plant-level initiatives.
- Interface with IT/Systems teams to improve ERP/MRP integration, production reporting, and manufacturing data collection systems.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Expert knowledge of CNC machining processes: milling, turning, multi-axis machining, Swiss-type turning.
- CNC programming and verification experience (G-code, conversational programming) and familiarity with CAM systems (Mastercam, Fusion 360, GibbsCAM).
- Proficiency with Fanuc, Siemens or Heidenhain controls; ability to troubleshoot control and servo issues on the shop floor.
- Strong blueprint reading skills including Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Experience with metrology tools and inspection equipment: CMM programming/operation, micrometers, calipers, height gauges, surface finish testers.
- Statistical Process Control (SPC), process capability analysis (Cp/Cpk) and familiarity with quality systems such as ISO 9001 / AS9100.
- Knowledge of tooling, fixture design, tool offsets, cutter selection and tool life management.
- Preventive maintenance planning and basic mechanical/electrical troubleshooting skills for machine tools.
- Proficient with ERP/MRP systems (e.g., SAP, Epicor, NetSuite) for shop orders, inventory and production reporting.
- Lean manufacturing tools: 5S, Kaizen, SMED, value stream mapping and root cause analysis methodologies.
- Experience with production scheduling, capacity planning and managing labor on a multi-shift manufacturing environment.
- Familiarity with materials and processes (aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, heat treatment, coatings) relevant to precision machining.

Education & Experience
Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- High school diploma or GED with vocational/technical training in CNC machining or manufacturing technology.
Preferred Education:
- Associate degree or higher in Manufacturing Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, or related field.
- Relevant certifications (CNC, Lean, Six Sigma Green Belt, ISO Lead Auditor) are a strong advantage.
