Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead end-to-end CNC project planning and execution including defining scope, deliverables, milestones, resource plans, cost estimates, and risk registers to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery of precision machined components.
  • Develop and validate CNC process plans by translating engineering drawings and CAD models into production-ready CAM programs, optimizing toolpaths, feeds, speeds, and cycle times for efficiency and part quality.
  • Manage CAM programming standards and oversee the creation, testing, and deployment of G-code across machines (Fanuc, Haas, Siemens) while verifying NC code through simulation and dry-run protocols to prevent scrap and downtime.
  • Coordinate tooling and fixture design: specify cutting tools, workholding, fixtures, and machine setups; collaborate with tooling vendors and in-house toolroom to prototype and validate fixtures for first-run success.
  • Maintain direct accountability for first article inspections (FAI), dimensional sign-off, and establishing control plans that meet customer requirements (APQP/PPAP) and ensure conformity to GD&T tolerances.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to reduce cycle times, tooling costs, and scrap by applying lean manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies (Kaizen events, 5S, root cause analysis).
  • Create and maintain accurate project schedules (MS Project, Smartsheet, ERP/MRP) and coordinate cross-functional teams — engineering, quality, purchasing, production and external suppliers — to meet production ramps and delivery schedules.
  • Manage supplier selection, qualification, and performance for outsourced machining, heat treat, plating and specialty processes; negotiate contracts, lead times, and cost reduction initiatives.
  • Monitor manufacturing capacity and load leveling: plan machine allocation, shift coverage, staffing needs, and subcontractor usage to meet fluctuating demands and minimize bottlenecks.
  • Establish and enforce production control systems and work instructions, including operator setup sheets, inspection procedures, and process capability studies (Cp/Cpk) to sustainably achieve quality targets.
  • Lead problem-solving and corrective action activities for production issues, including root cause analysis (Fishbone, 5 Whys), containment, corrective/preventive actions, and verification of effectiveness.
  • Prepare and control project budgets, including variance analysis, forecasting, and cost-to-complete reporting; identify cost saving opportunities through tooling consolidation, process optimization and supplier negotiations.
  • Oversee machine qualification, preventive maintenance schedules, and calibration programs for CNC equipment and inspection machines (CMM, optical comparators), ensuring minimal unplanned downtime and compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
  • Serve as the primary customer and stakeholder point-of-contact for program status, technical clarifications, schedule impacts, and change requests; present clear program reports and risk mitigations.
  • Implement and maintain quality management system compliance (ISO 9001, AS9100 where applicable), internal audits, and non-conformance handling to support customer audits and certifications.
  • Mentor and coach CNC programmers, production engineers and operators; develop training plans for CAM best practices, setup optimization, and quality inspection techniques to raise team competency.
  • Validate prototype and low-volume production runs and iterate machining processes to reach full-rate production with consistent yields and throughput targets.
  • Drive new product introduction (NPI) activities related to machining readiness, including manufacturing feasibility assessments, design for manufacturability (DFM) feedback, and tooling/fixture development timelines.
  • Manage software and digital tools used in machining operations (CAD/CAM, tool libraries, post processors, machine simulations) and coordinate software upgrades, licensing and training.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, health and safety standards (lockout/tagout, PPE, machine guarding) and promote a culture of safety, process discipline and continuous improvement on the shop floor.
  • Track and report key performance indicators (KPIs) such as on-time delivery, first pass yield, scrap rate, tool life, and throughput; use data to drive corrective actions and highlight program health to leadership.
  • Oversee engineering change order (ECO) implementation on shop floor — assess impact, update CNC programs, tooling and inspection plans, and communicate changes to production teams and suppliers.
  • Lead cross-functional post-mortems after major program milestones or issues to capture lessons learned, update processes and reduce risk for future projects.
  • Coordinate international/remote machining projects, ensuring consistent process transfer, documentation, and quality across sites or contract manufacturers.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc production data requests, generate metrics and conduct exploratory analysis to identify process trends and continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Contribute to the organization's manufacturing strategy and digital roadmap including CAM standardization, automation and Industry 4.0 initiatives.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate customer requirements and design intent into validated manufacturing and inspection requirements.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile-like ceremonies for continuous improvement projects within the manufacturing engineering team.
  • Assist purchasing with supplier technical evaluations, sample inspections and incoming quality processes when vendor-produced parts are used in assemblies.
  • Provide on-call technical escalation for urgent production issues, weekend setups or critical customer deliveries as required.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • CNC programming and process planning (Mastercam, Fusion 360, GibbsCAM, Esprit or equivalent).
  • Proficient with CAD (SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor) to interpret and modify 3D models for fixturing and CAM workflows.
  • Deep understanding of G-code, post-processors, tool libraries and machine-specific codes (Fanuc, Haas, Siemens).
  • Strong knowledge of machining processes: milling, turning, multi-axis machining (3-, 4-, 5-axis), drilling, tapping and threading.
  • Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) interpretation and application for inspection and process control.
  • Experience with quality systems: APQP, PPAP, FAI, SPC, CMM programming and inspection reporting tools.
  • ERP/MRP experience for capacity planning and order tracking (SAP, Oracle NetSuite, Epicor, or similar).
  • Fixture and tooling design competency, including hands-on collaboration with toolroom and external tooling vendors.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing tools, Six Sigma methodologies, Kaizen and continuous improvement facilitation.
  • Project management skills: scheduling, budgeting, risk management and status reporting (MS Project, Smartsheet, JIRA).
  • Knowledge of maintenance and calibration scheduling for CNC machinery and inspection equipment.
  • Experience with manufacturing software: CAM simulations, toolpath verification, PLM/PDM systems and post-processor maintenance.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Associate degree or technical diploma in Machining Technology, CNC Programming, Manufacturing Technology, or related field (or equivalent hands-on experience).

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering or related technical discipline.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP), Lean/Six Sigma (Green/Black Belt) certifications are strongly preferred.
