Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Supervise and coach a team of CNC operators, programmers and setup personnel, assigning daily tasks, monitoring productivity and maintaining a safe, collaborative work environment.
  • Create, edit and optimize CNC programs (G-code) for milling, turning and mill-turn centers using Fanuc, Siemens and compatible controls to maximize cycle efficiency and part quality.
  • Oversee machine setup and first-article runs, verify tooling, offsets, workholding and program correctness, and approve process sign-offs prior to production release.
  • Develop, maintain and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions and standardized setup sheets for repeatable, scalable machining operations.
  • Manage daily production scheduling and capacity planning to meet on-time delivery targets while minimizing lead time and changeover downtime.
  • Ensure dimensional conformity by enforcing inspection plans, in-process checks and final part verification using calipers, micrometers, gauges and CMMs; take corrective action when trends occur.
  • Interpret engineering drawings and GD&T requirements to define machining strategies, tolerances and inspection criteria for complex parts.
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective action for scrap, rejects and customer non-conformances using 8D or similar methodologies; implement permanent countermeasures.
  • Implement and sustain Lean manufacturing practices (5S, Kaizen, SMED) on the shop floor to reduce waste, improve flow and increase machine utilization.
  • Coordinate tooling and consumable management: evaluate tool life, qualify new tools, manage inventory levels, and work with purchasing to control costs and lead times.
  • Train and certify operators on new machines, processes, measurement tools and safety procedures; maintain training records and competency matrices.
  • Monitor and report key performance indicators (KPIs) such as OEE, throughput, scrap rate, first-pass yield and on-time delivery to senior management; drive improvement plans.
  • Schedule and oversee preventive maintenance with maintenance technicians; escalate mechanical or control issues and recommend capital projects when needed.
  • Validate and commission new CNC equipment and automation, working with vendors and engineering to optimize cell layout and integration.
  • Collaborate with design engineering, process engineering and quality to launch new parts, qualify processes and transition from prototyping to production.
  • Enforce plant safety procedures, ensure compliance with OSHA and company safety standards, conduct toolbox talks and participate in safety audits.
  • Manage shift handover documentation and communication to ensure consistent production performance across shifts and minimize information loss.
  • Control cost through labor planning, scrap reduction initiatives and continuous process optimization; contribute to departmental budgeting and cost targets.
  • Maintain traceability, production records and inspection documentation to support internal audits and customer quality requirements (e.g., PPAP).
  • Conduct regular machine capability studies (Cpk) and process capability analysis; recommend process tightening or tooling changes where necessary.
  • Facilitate supplier and vendor relationships for tooling, fixtures and outsourced machining, including qualifying suppliers and monitoring delivery/performance.
  • Participate in cross-functional improvement teams to solve complex production problems and to drive product/process improvements across the plant.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with ERP/MRP scheduling updates and data entry to keep production and inventory records accurate.
  • Support continuous improvement projects outside of direct supervision scope, including layout optimizations and automation evaluations.
  • Prepare and present shift performance reports and improvement plans for weekly production review meetings.
  • Mentor high-potential operators and support succession planning by identifying training needs and career development paths.
  • Participate in customer escalations and on-site customer visits when required to explain process controls and corrective actions.
  • Evaluate and recommend capital equipment purchases and ROI analysis in partnership with operations and engineering.
  • Maintain tooling and fixture libraries and standardize best practices across similar part families.
  • Support internal audits and contribute to maintaining ISO quality certifications and other compliance programs.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • CNC programming and editing (G-code) for milling, turning and mill-turn machines.
  • Hands-on experience with Fanuc and/or Siemens control systems and troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency with CAM/CAD software (Mastercam, Fusion 360, SolidCAM, or GibbsCAM) and ability to review CAM outputs.
  • Strong blueprint reading and interpretation skills with deep understanding of GD&T.
  • Metrology and inspection skills: CMM programming/use, calipers, micrometers, height gauges, surface finish measurement.
  • Tooling and fixturing knowledge: tool selection, tool life management, coolant strategies and workholding design.
  • Knowledge of PLC basics, machine controls diagnostics and spindle/axis maintenance interplay.
  • Experience implementing Lean tools: 5S, Kaizen, SMED, value stream mapping.
  • Statistical Process Control (SPC) and process capability analysis (Cpk, Ppk); experience with Minitab or equivalent preferred.
  • Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems (SAP, Epicor, Oracle) for scheduling and material flow.
  • Root-cause analysis techniques (5 Whys, Fishbone, 8D) and corrective action documentation.
  • Fixture design and qualification, including first-article inspection and control plans.
  • Experience with quality systems (ISO 9001) and production documentation (PPAP, FAI).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED with relevant technical/machining background.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate degree or technical diploma in Machining Technology, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • Additional certifications: CNC Programming, Manufacturing Supervisor training, Lean/Six Sigma (Yellow/Green Belt).
