Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Supervise and direct daily on-site construction activities for multiple crews, ensuring work is performed in accordance with approved plans, specifications, and project schedules while maintaining productivity and quality standards.
  • Read, interpret, and apply blueprints, drawings, and technical specifications to plan work sequences, set priorities, and coordinate tasks among trades to avoid rework and delays.
  • Communicate daily with Project Managers and Superintendents to report progress, identify scheduling conflicts, request materials, and recommend adjustments to keep the project on time and within budget.
  • Enforce and promote jobsite safety programs, conduct daily safety briefings (toolbox talks), ensure PPE and fall protection compliance, and respond to incidents with timely reporting and corrective actions in line with OSHA and company requirements.
  • Coordinate, schedule, and supervise subcontractors, vendors, and specialty trades to ensure scope clarity, sequencing, and adherence to quality and safety standards, resolving conflicts and scope gaps proactively.
  • Assign tasks, train, mentor, and evaluate crew members; develop crew schedules, track hours, and manage labor allocations to maximize efficiency and meet critical milestones.
  • Perform and oversee quality control inspections throughout construction phases, conduct punch lists, coordinate inspections by third-party inspectors or authorities having jurisdiction, and ensure timely correction of deficiencies.
  • Verify materials and equipment received on site against purchase orders and submittals, control inventory of consumables, and document material usage to minimize waste and reduce cost overruns.
  • Operate or supervise the operation of jobsite equipment (forklifts, cranes, excavators, concrete pumps) in accordance with certifications and safety procedures, and coordinate operator schedules and maintenance.
  • Lay out work areas using lasers, transit, and layout tools to establish grades, anchors, and control points; verify dimensional accuracy before installation and construction activities proceed.
  • Implement and document quality assurance/quality control procedures, maintain daily logs, production reports, and as-built records required for project closeout and client documentation.
  • Monitor and maintain environmental controls on site (erosion control, stormwater best practices, dust mitigation, hazardous material handling) to comply with permits and environmental regulations.
  • Estimate and report labor and material needs for upcoming work packages, provide input to cost-control measures, and assist Project Management with change order documentation and field impact assessments.
  • Coordinate concrete pours, formwork, rebar placement, and curing schedules, ensuring required testing and concrete strength documentation are obtained and recorded.
  • Facilitate scheduling meetings and daily coordination huddles with foremen from other trades to identify critical path activities, long-lead items, and required inspections.
  • Enforce site housekeeping and security, organize temporary facilities (trailers, sanitation, temporary power), and ensure clear access and egress for emergency response and deliveries.
  • Troubleshoot technical field issues, provide practical trade-based solutions to unexpected site conditions, and escalate complex problems with recommended corrective plans and cost/time impacts.
  • Mentor and develop crew members on safe work practices, equipment operation, and trade techniques, fostering a collaborative, productive team environment and supporting apprenticeship development.
  • Verify compliance with contract specifications and regulatory requirements during installation, and prepare documentation required for compliance audits and project close-out.
  • Execute and maintain daily time and production reports, track manpower, productivity metrics, downtime causes, and provide actionable feedback to improve field performance and project forecasting.
  • Support commissioning and start-up activities by coordinating system tests, verifying installation sequences, and assisting trade partners with functional checks and punch list closures.
  • Lead site mobilization and demobilization activities, ensuring efficient setup of site utilities, temporary protection measures, signage, and proper restoration and cleanup at project completion.
  • Maintain productive relationships with clients, architects, engineers, inspectors, and local authorities to expedite approvals, address RFIs, and keep stakeholders informed of field progress and issues.
  • Implement risk mitigation strategies for weather, supply chain delays, and site constraints, maintaining contingency plans and adjusting crews and sequences to protect schedule and budget.

Secondary Functions

  • Support documentation of as-built conditions and field changes for integration into BIM models and project records.
  • Assist Project Managers with field verification for change orders, time impact analyses, and substantiation of extra work claims.
  • Participate in pre-construction site visits and constructability reviews to provide trade-specific input on means, methods, and sequencing.
  • Train crew leads on timesheet, safety reporting, and material tracking systems to improve field reporting accuracy.
  • Coordinate third-party testing and inspections (concrete testing, soil compaction, weld inspections) and ensure test results are logged and communicated to stakeholders.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Blueprint reading and construction drawing interpretation (architectural, structural, MEP) with the ability to translate drawings into field layout and work sequences.
  • Proficient understanding of OSHA regulations and site safety standards, plus experience conducting safety audits, incident investigations, and toolbox talks.
  • Strong knowledge of means and methods for concrete, formwork, rebar, masonry, framing, and finish trades relevant to scope being supervised.
  • Hands-on experience operating or coordinating heavy equipment (excavators, skid steers, forklifts, cranes) and understanding equipment load charts and rigging basics.
  • Construction scheduling familiarity (MS Project, Primavera P6, or equivalent) to follow critical path activities and flag schedule impacts.

  • Basic knowledge of construction layout tools (laser levels, total stations, transit) and ability to verify elevations and alignments.
  • Competence in reading and enforcing specification requirements, submittal review, and shop drawing coordination.
  • Knowledge of environmental and erosion control measures, stormwater best practices, and hazardous material handling procedures.
  • Familiarity with commissioning and start-up procedures for building systems relevant to the project.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training or trade school completion preferred.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate degree or certificate in Construction Management, Carpentry, Civil Technology, or related field.
  • OSHA 10/30, CPR/First Aid, and relevant trade certifications (e.g., NCCER, forklift operator, crane signalperson) preferred.
