Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Supervise and monitor inmate housing units, common areas, and movement within the facility to maintain order, prevent disturbances, and ensure the safety of staff, visitors, and inmates.
  • Conduct thorough security checks and headcounts at scheduled and irregular intervals, document results, and immediately report discrepancies or missing persons according to facility protocols.
  • Search inmates, cells, personal property, mail, and common areas for contraband (drugs, weapons, unauthorized electronics) using both pat-down and mechanical search techniques while maintaining chain-of-custody procedures.

  • Escort and transport inmates to courts, medical appointments, intake/release points, and external facilities while maintaining secure restraints and ensuring safety during transit.
  • Respond to alarms, fights, medical emergencies, fires, escapes, and other critical incidents; apply emergency protocols, provide first aid/CPR until medical staff arrive, and coordinate with emergency services as needed.
  • Use de-escalation techniques and crisis intervention strategies to defuse tense situations, reduce use-of-force incidents, and preserve safety and dignity for inmates and staff.
  • Apply approved physical control techniques, restraints, and defensive tactics in accordance with use-of-force policies, documented training, and legal standards.
  • Maintain direct observation and surveillance (including camera systems) to identify suspicious behavior, prevent escapes, and detect potential security vulnerabilities.
  • Intake, screen, classify, and process new detainees, verifying identity, documenting personal property, conducting medical and mental health screenings, and assigning housing based on risk and programming needs.
  • Conduct and document perimeter and facility security inspections, maintenance walk-throughs, and facility completion checks to identify hazards, damage, or breaches and report them for correction.
  • Facilitate visitation and communication processes, ensuring compliance with visitation rules, screening visitors, and overseeing monitored communications (phone, video) per policy.
  • Support rehabilitative and reentry programs by monitoring inmate participation, enforcing program rules, and coordinating with education, counseling, and case management staff.

  • Deliver formal testimony in internal hearings or in court proceedings as needed, providing clear, factual accounts based on direct observation and documented evidence.
  • Maintain professional and secure custody standards during inmate intake and release processes, ensuring all legal and administrative paperwork is accurate and verified.
  • Train and mentor new correctional staff on facility policies, security procedures, use-of-force protocols, emergency response, and documentation expectations to ensure consistent operations.
  • Monitor and control access to secured areas, maintain keys/secure credential accountability, and oversee lock and security system operations to prevent unauthorized access or breaches.
  • Enforce and model ethical, non-discriminatory behavior and confidentiality regarding inmate records, medical information, and sensitive facility operations.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate in scheduled and ad-hoc training programs to maintain certifications (CPR/First Aid, defensive tactics, firearms where applicable) and to stay current on corrections best practices.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements
