🎯 Role Definition

A Crane Operator safely and efficiently operates mobile, crawler, tower, overhead, or marine cranes to lift, move, and position heavy loads on construction sites, industrial facilities, and marine terminals. This role requires mastery of rigging techniques, load calculations, lift planning, hand and radio signaling, pre- and post-operational inspections, and strict adherence to safety standards (OSHA, ASME, company policies). The Crane Operator works closely with riggers, signal persons, lift directors, and site management to execute planned lifts, troubleshoot equipment issues, and maintain accurate lift and maintenance records.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct thorough pre-operation inspections of crane structure, cab controls, hydraulic and electrical systems, hoists, hooks, wire rope, slings, outriggers and safety devices; document findings and immediately report and tag out defects to maintenance when deficiencies are discovered.
  • Review lift plans, site layouts, engineering drawings, and load charts to confirm crane capacity, center of gravity, pick points and clearances for each lift and collaborate with the lift director and rigging crew to finalize the lift procedure.
  • Calculate load weights, rigging configurations and radius to select the correct crane, boom length, counterweights and lifting accessories in accordance with manufacturer specifications and load charts.
  • Assemble, erect, and disassemble mobile and tower cranes on site following manufacturer procedures, manufacturer-approved erection plans and company safety guidelines while ensuring proper outriggers, mats, cribbing and blocking for ground support.
  • Operate tower, mobile, crawler and overhead cranes to lift, swing, lower and position materials and equipment safely, smoothly and precisely while maintaining constant situational awareness of surrounding personnel and obstacles.
  • Utilize standardized hand signals, two-way radios and other communication protocols to coordinate with signal persons and ground crew, ensuring clear and precise direction during lifts and avoiding miscommunication on noisy or complex sites.
  • Rig loads using slings, shackles, hooks, spreader bars and lifting beams; inspect rigging gear for wear, deformation and certifications before each use and ensure proper protection of loads and edges to prevent damage.
  • Execute complex multi-crane lifts under the direction of a lift director following certified lift plans, tag lines and synchronized movement protocols to maintain load stability and prevent collisions.
  • Monitor crane load moment indicators, working radius indicators, anti-two block devices and overload alarms during lifts and take immediate corrective action when warning conditions or system alerts are observed.
  • Perform daily, weekly and monthly maintenance tasks and minor repairs such as lubricating sheaves and wire rope, topping off hydraulic fluids, replacing filters and performing battery checks to ensure safe reliable operation and reduce downtime.
  • Maintain accurate operator logs, pre-shift inspection checklists, lift reports and maintenance records in compliance with company and regulatory requirements and prepare documentation for audits and safety reviews.
  • Follow OSHA, ASME B30 series and company safety procedures including establishing and maintaining exclusion zones, fall protection, lockout/tagout for maintenance and compliance with site-specific safety plans.
  • Coordinate with riggers, crane rigging technicians, truck drivers and site supervisors to sequence lifts, set delivery windows, manage traffic and staging areas and minimize interference with other trades and on-site activities.
  • Assess ground conditions, load distribution and cribbing requirements, and request geotechnical input or additional matting when necessary to ensure crane stability and prevent overturns or ground failures.
  • Troubleshoot and identify mechanical and electrical failures in the field, coordinate with mechanics for timed repairs, and assist maintenance crews in diagnostic procedures to restore crane availability quickly and safely.
  • Execute emergency procedures in the event of mechanical failure, loss of power, load swing or unsafe conditions, including controlled lowering of loads, crane shutdown and evacuation of personnel from the danger zone.
  • Mentor and train new operators, signal persons and riggers on safe crane operation, correct rigging techniques, hand signals, site-specific procedures and the importance of pre-lift planning and inspections.
  • Ensure compliance with weight and dimension limits for transport and assist with crane mobilization/demobilization including rigging for transport, securing loads and complying with DOT/road permit requirements when moving equipment between sites.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, daily safety briefings and pre-lift meetings, contributing to hazard identification, lift risk assessments and continuous improvement feedback on lift planning and site logistics.
  • Maintain professional communication with project managers, engineers and clients regarding lift feasibility, schedule impacts, special equipment needs and best practices for staging and installation.
  • Apply industry best practices for noise, dust and environmental control while operating near sensitive equipment or in occupied structures to reduce impact on adjacent operations and comply with environmental and community requirements.
  • Validate sling and hardware certifications and rotate slings and rigging out of service per inspection criteria; coordinate replacement or recertification of rigging gear to maintain a compliant lifting program.
  • Stay current with industry changes, attend required training, renew operator certifications (NCCCO or equivalent), and ensure medical and drug-screening requirements are maintained for continued safe operations.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist site safety personnel in developing lift-specific JSA/JHA (Job Safety Analysis/Job Hazard Analysis) documentation and recommend controls based on hands-on lifting experience.
  • Support logistics teams by providing input on crane lift sequencing, laydown area optimization and material staging to improve workflow and reduce rehandling costs.
  • Provide input to procurement and maintenance on replacement parts, service intervals and budget projections based on observed wear patterns and operating hours.
  • Help prepare incident reports, near-miss investigations and corrective action plans to strengthen the safety culture and prevent recurrence of unsafe conditions.
  • Occasionally perform gate/check-in duties, inventorying lifting gear and small tools, and ensuring proper storage and security of critical equipment.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Certified crane operation with experience on tower, mobile (all-terrain/crawler) and overhead cranes; familiarity with NCCCO or equivalent certification standards.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting load charts, manufacturer manuals, engineering lift plans and structural drawings to determine safe crane configurations.
  • Advanced rigging skills: selecting slings, shackles, spreader bars, lifting beams and hardware; performing sling angle and center-of-gravity calculations.
  • Strong understanding of OSHA regulations, ASME B30 standards and site-specific safety policies related to crane operations and rigging.
  • Skilled in pre-op inspection protocols and preventive maintenance tasks, including wire rope inspection, hydraulic system checks and basic electrical troubleshooting.
  • Competent in executing multi-crane lifts, synchronized lifting procedures and use of tag lines to control load movement.
  • Experience operating crane control systems, load moment indicators (LMI), anti-two block devices, boom angle indicators and other crane safety instrumentation.
  • Ability to perform accurate load weight estimation, radius measurement, and stability assessments to prevent overloads and tip-overs.
  • Proficiency with radio communications and standardized hand signals; able to act as a signal person when certified.
  • Knowledge of transport and mobilization procedures, DOT permit requirements, and safe rigging for highway moves when relocating cranes.
  • Familiarity with computerized crane management systems or digital inspection apps for logging inspections and maintenance records (preferred).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED; demonstrated competency in math and mechanical concepts.

Preferred Education:

  • Technical diploma, certificate or coursework in heavy equipment operation, mechanical technology, or industrial maintenance.

Typical Experience Range:

  • Valid driver's license; CDL preferred when transport responsibilities are required.
