Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Set up, calibrate and program cutting machines (CNC laser, plasma, waterjet, or shears) according to engineering drawings, digital files, or written work orders, ensuring correct tooling, material orientation and machine parameters before production runs.

- Monitor machine operation continuously during runs — adjusting feed rates, cutting speeds, focal position (laser), pierce parameters (plasma), or waterjet pressure — to prevent defects, reduce scrap and maintain cycle times.
- Perform machine setup for new jobs including loading/unloading material, installing and aligning fixtures, centering parts, and entering or verifying program parameters to minimize setup time and maximize uptime.
- Troubleshoot machine and process issues (tool wear, nozzle clogging, software faults, hydraulic/pneumatic irregularities) and perform basic corrective actions, calling maintenance for complex repairs to reduce downtime.
- Maintain accurate production records including machine logs, material usage, scrap reports and timecards to support traceability, continuous improvement and inventory control.
- Apply and adhere to company quality systems (ISO, AS9100, or internal) and inspection procedures, performing required documentation for nonconforming parts and participating in root cause analysis when quality issues arise.
- Load, stage and stage-off raw materials, coordinate with material handlers and verify material specifications (grade, thickness, heat code) prior to cutting to prevent rework and ensure compliance with customer requirements.
- Optimize nesting/layout and cutting sequences to maximize material yield, reduce cycle time and lower production costs while meeting part tolerances and finish requirements.
- Maintain cutting-edge knowledge of machine capabilities, tooling options and cutting consumables to recommend process improvements, tooling changes or new machine programming techniques that improve throughput or quality.
- Execute preventive maintenance tasks and daily checks (lubrication, coolant levels, filter checks, alignment verification) per schedule to prolong machine life and maintain consistent performance.
- Apply and maintain proper guarding, ventilation and fume extraction when working with laser, plasma and other thermal cutting equipment, following all OSHA and company safety protocols and PPE requirements.
- Collaborate with engineers, programmers and quality personnel to validate new programs, confirm machine offsets and qualify first articles during production ramp-up or changeovers.
- Perform precision secondary operations as required (deburring, tapping, countersinking, part marking) or coordinate hand-off to downstream processes while ensuring seamless flow and part integrity.
- Participate actively in daily production meetings, continuous improvement (Kaizen) events, and 5S/lean initiatives to drive efficiency, reduce waste and improve workplace safety.
- Train and mentor junior operators or temporary staff on machine setup, safe operation, inspection criteria and standardized work to build cross-functional capability within the team.
- Maintain a clean, organized work area and perform housekeeping tasks consistent with 5S and shop safety standards to minimize hazards and ensure operational readiness.
- Support scheduling and priority changes by adjusting sequencing or performing quick changeovers to address urgent customer orders or rush jobs while maintaining quality.
- Report and document equipment malfunctions, material shortages, safety incidents and near-misses promptly through the proper channels and contribute to corrective action follow-up.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in validating and improving shop floor work instructions, standard operating procedures and CNC program libraries for repeatability and knowledge retention.
- Support continuous improvement projects by providing process data, time studies and operator feedback to engineering and process improvement teams.
- Participate in cross-training rotations to maintain coverage across related cutting technologies (laser, waterjet, plasma, shear) and reduce single-point dependency.
- Help maintain inventory of common tooling, consumables and spare parts (nozzles, lenses, O-rings, blades), flagging low-stock items to supervisors or purchasing.
