Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate assigned delivery vehicle (van, box truck, refrigerated truck, or light commercial vehicle) in a safe, fuel-efficient manner, following all traffic laws and company driving policies to complete scheduled routes on time.
  • Execute pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip vehicle inspections; document and report mechanical issues, damage, fluid levels, tire condition, and safety equipment status to fleet maintenance or dispatch.
  • Load and secure packages, pallets, and cargo by weight and destination sequence to ensure safe transport and efficient stop order, using liftgates, pallet jacks, hand trucks and proper tie-down techniques as required.
  • Accurately read, interpret, and fulfill delivery manifests, manifests with special handling instructions, bills of lading, and route sheets; verify item counts, SKUs, and condition prior to delivery.
  • Use handheld mobile devices, barcode scanners, GPS navigation systems, and route-optimization apps to scan packages, capture proof-of-delivery (POD) signatures and photos, update delivery status in real time, and sync with central dispatch systems.
  • Provide professional, customer-facing service at each stop: confirm recipient identity, obtain signatures or electronic PODs, answer delivery-related questions, and place packages at approved drop locations while following customer-specific instructions.
  • Collect and process COD (cash-on-delivery), payment collection, returns, or exchange paperwork securely and accurately, following company cash handling procedures and maintaining accurate receipts.
  • Follow company and industry safety regulations, including Department of Transportation (DOT) rules, Hours of Service, ELD operation, and hazardous material placarding/handling when applicable; maintain a valid driver's license and necessary certifications.
  • Prioritize and manage time effectively to meet tight delivery windows, adjust to traffic and route changes, and communicate delays or exceptions to dispatch immediately to maintain customer expectations.
  • Report accidents, vehicle incidents, lost or damaged shipments, and customer complaints promptly and accurately; participate in incident investigations and follow-up remediation actions.
  • Assist with on-the-ground route optimization by suggesting stop reorderings, documenting recurring traffic issues, and providing feedback to dispatch and route planners to improve efficiency and reduce drive time.
  • Maintain accurate trip logs, mileage reports, fuel receipts, vehicle checklists, and exception reports; submit paperwork and digital documentation according to daily cutoffs and company recordkeeping standards.
  • Secure company property, tools, and equipment in the vehicle; ensure all delivered packages are accounted for and locked or staged appropriately during breaks or overnight vehicle parking.
  • Adhere to loading dock and warehouse safety procedures when collecting or returning freight; coordinate with warehouse staff for timely load-outs and inbound paperwork clearance.
  • Operate vehicle liftgates, ramps, and tail lifts safely and in compliance with training; assist with heavy or bulky items using proper ergonomics to reduce injury and product damage.
  • Conduct minor on-the-road troubleshooting (e.g., tire pressure checks, fluid top-offs, jump starts) and coordinate with roadside assistance or fleet maintenance when required to minimize downtime.
  • Follow temperature control procedures for refrigerated shipments, monitor temperature logs, and document any deviations to protect perishable goods.
  • Participate in training, safety meetings, and driver coaching sessions; mentor new hires and provide on-route training if assigned as a trainer or lead.
  • Manage missed deliveries, reattempt scheduling, and coordinate with customer service or dispatch to reschedule deliveries, pickup returns, or escalate exceptions.
  • Maintain a professional appearance, enforce company uniform and PPE requirements, and uphold a customer-oriented attitude that supports brand reputation.
