Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Safely operate company-assigned box trucks, straight trucks, or tractor-trailers (as applicable) to pick up, transport, and deliver goods on assigned local or regional routes while complying with federal, state, and local traffic laws and DOT regulations.
- Perform thorough pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections of the vehicle, reporting defects, safety hazards, or maintenance needs to fleet services and documenting issues in inspection logs and maintenance systems.
- Load and unload cargo using hand trucks, pallet jacks, and tiedown equipment, ensuring proper distribution, securement, and protection of freight to prevent damage during transport.
- Accurately scan, record, and reconcile shipment barcodes and tracking numbers using handheld electronic devices or mobile apps to update delivery status and provide proof of delivery (POD).
- Manage multi-stop delivery routes and optimize stop sequences using GPS navigation, route planning software, or dispatch instructions to meet scheduled delivery windows and reduce fuel consumption.
- Maintain and complete all required documentation including bills of lading, delivery receipts, electronic logs (ELD), fuel receipts, and incident reports in compliance with company policy and DOT recordkeeping requirements.
- Follow safe lifting techniques and, when necessary, physically move or assist with heavy merchandise while using appropriate personal protective equipment and mechanical aids to minimize risk of injury.
- Communicate proactively with dispatch, warehouse personnel, and customers to confirm delivery instructions, report delays or exceptions, and respond to route or schedule changes in real time.
- Handle customer interactions professionally, collecting signatures, processing returns, exchanging order confirmations, and resolving basic delivery discrepancies or damage claims at the point of delivery.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and secure vehicle interior and cargo area, including regular checks for misplaced items, secure storage of hazardous material (if authorized), and adherence to vehicle sanitation standards.
- Monitor and manage hours-of-service and duty status using ELDs or logbooks, ensuring compliance with HOS regulations and coordinating rest periods and fueling stops with dispatch.
- Safely operate loading equipment where licensed and trained, including dock-levelers and pallet jacks, and coordinate with warehouse staff for efficient loading and unloading procedures.
- Respond to incidents such as vehicle breakdowns, accidents, or cargo damage by following emergency procedures, notifying dispatch and safety personnel, and completing incident documentation and insurance reports as required.
- Conduct basic vehicle maintenance tasks such as checking oil, coolant, tire pressure, lights, brakes, and fluid levels, performing minor repairs when trained, and scheduling professional service for larger issues.
- Execute delivery and pickup schedules for specialized freight such as refrigerated goods, hazardous materials (if certified), or oversized items with required temperature controls, placarding, and handling procedures.
- Adhere to company safety programs and participate in regular safety meetings, driving performance reviews, and defensive driving training to maintain high safety standards and reduce claims.
- Track mileage, fuel usage, tolls, and other operational expenses and submit accurate expense reports and fuel card reconciliations in accordance with company policy.
- Assist in warehouse duties during slow delivery periods or as requested, including order staging, pallet wrapping, inventory counts, and staging loads for next-day routes to support operations.
- Execute gate and facility access protocols at customer sites, secure required permits or passes for restricted locations, and follow specific security guidelines for high-value or sensitive shipments.
- Provide accurate communication and documentation for shipment exceptions such as refused deliveries, address corrections, incomplete orders, damaged goods, or lost items and escalate unresolved issues to management.
- Participate in driver training, continuous improvement initiatives, and mentor new drivers on route familiarity, safe driving techniques, and customer service standards.
