Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Provide confident, efficient chairside assistance for a wide range of dental procedures including restorations, extractions, endodontics, periodontal therapy, orthodontic procedures, implants and minor oral surgery, ensuring instruments and materials are prepared and handed over aseptically to the clinician.
- Prepare and maintain the dental surgery environment to clinical governance standards: ensure instruments and equipment are sterilised, trays are correctly set, suction and handpieces are working, and clinical surfaces are cleaned between patients.
- Take accurate, high-quality intraoral and extraoral radiographs where legally and practice-permitted, following radiation protection protocols and maintaining imaging logs and QA documentation.
- Monitor, record and report patient vital signs and observations during conscious sedation or complex procedures; assist in local anaesthesia preparation and post-operative care to ensure patient safety and comfort.
- Assist the dentist with impressions, provisional restorations, packing haemostatic materials, suturing support and provision of materials during oral surgery or implant procedures.
- Maintain detailed, contemporaneous patient records and clinical notes, including treatment plans, consent forms, clinical findings and postoperative instructions, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with GDPR/HIPAA regulations.
- Manage instrument decontamination pathways, operate sterilisation/washer-disinfector units, conduct biological and chemical indicator checks and keep complete sterilisation logs to meet regulatory inspections and practice policies.
- Apply infection prevention and control standards consistently, including appropriate use of PPE, safe disposal of sharps and clinical waste, and escalation of any breaches or incidents to the practice manager or clinical governance lead.
- Prepare, mix and deliver dental materials (cements, composites, alginates, impression materials) accurately under clinician direction and ensure correct labeling, storage and traceability of materials and batch numbers.
- Provide empathetic pre-, peri- and post-procedure patient support: explain treatment steps clearly, manage anxiety with behavioural techniques, give oral hygiene and postoperative instructions, and answer routine queries to maximise patient adherence and satisfaction.
- Triaging patient calls and urgent clinical queries in line with practice protocols, coordinating with clinicians to prioritise emergency treatment and ensure rapid access to care for acute dental pain or trauma.
- Participate in pain management protocols by assisting with topical anaesthetics application, recording local anaesthesia usage and advising on appropriate analgesia and aftercare instructions following dental procedures.
- Support cross-infection investigations and adverse event reporting by collecting relevant clinical information, photographing clinical sites when necessary, and assisting with root cause analysis and improvements.
- Assist in the management of dental impressions and lab communication: prepare, label and dispatch models and prescriptions to dental laboratories, track lab work, and liaise with technicians about adjustments and remakes.
- Conduct daily and weekly checks of clinical equipment, oxygen/suction systems, emergency drug kits and defibrillators; ensure expiration dates are current and log routine maintenance and safety checks.
- Mentor and supervise junior nursing staff, trainees and dental nursing students by demonstrating best practice techniques, providing constructive feedback, and contributing to competency sign-off and workplace-based assessments.
- Participate in practice clinical audits and quality improvement projects (e.g., radiography quality, infection control audits, patient satisfaction), collect data, and contribute to action plans to raise standards of care.
- Stock manage clinical and consumable supplies: monitor inventory levels, place orders, receive deliveries, and rotate stock to minimise wastage and ensure availability of essential items and laboratory materials.
- Support the implementation of safeguarding procedures by recognising signs of abuse or neglect, following local protocols, completing appropriate documentation and escalating concerns to the designated safeguarding lead.
