Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Own and evolve the design vision and strategy for one or more product areas, translating business objectives and user insights into a coherent roadmap and prioritized initiatives that improve user satisfaction and key product metrics.
  • Lead, hire, and develop a team of product designers, interaction designers, visual designers, and UX researchers through career development plans, regular 1:1 coaching, performance reviews, and mentorship to grow both craft and leadership capabilities.
  • Define, govern, and scale a robust design system including components, tokens, accessibility guidelines, documentation, and contribution workflows to ensure consistency, velocity, and reuse across multiple products and platforms.

  • Collaborate with engineering leadership to embed design into the delivery lifecycle, define handoff processes, clarify acceptance criteria, and reduce rework by ensuring design intent is preserved through implementation.
  • Set and measure design KPIs (e.g., usability metrics, task success, NPS, conversion, retention) and present regular design impact reports to senior leadership showing how design investments drive business results.
  • Run and operationalize user research and usability testing programs (qualitative and quantitative), synthesize findings into clear product recommendations, and ensure insights are integrated into the product backlog and roadmap.
  • Lead cross-functional design critiques and facilitate decision-making conversations that balance user needs, technical feasibility, and business constraints while maintaining high design quality.
  • Manage stakeholder relationships with marketing, analytics, legal, and operations to ensure product experiences meet regulatory, branding, and performance requirements across channels.
  • Drive inclusive and accessible design practices (WCAG standards) across teams, ensuring accessibility is considered from research to release and supported by testing and QA processes.
  • Own the hiring lifecycle for the design team including sourcing strategies, interviewing, offer negotiation, and onboarding to ensure timely capacity planning and cultural fit.
  • Develop and steward the team’s design culture—promote best practices, continuous learning, design thinking, documentation, and cross-pollination through workshops, brown-bags, and show-and-tell sessions.

  • Oversee visual brand execution within product interfaces, ensuring typography, color, motion, and visual hierarchy support brand guidelines and improve usability and trust.
  • Facilitate alignment across distributed or remote teams, establishing synchronous and asynchronous collaboration patterns, clear documentation, and reliable delivery cadences.
  • Resolve design conflicts and prioritize trade-offs when competing business goals or technical constraints arise, advocating for outcomes that maximize user value and business impact.
  • Serve as the design representative in executive forums, articulating design rationale, resource needs, timelines, and strategic priorities to influence senior stakeholders and secure buy-in.
  • Establish onboarding and quality standards for contributors and external agencies/vendors, ensuring third-party work aligns with product principles, accessibility, and system standards.
  • Create and maintain a roadmap for design capabilities (e.g., design system maturity, research infrastructure, tooling), and track progress against quarterly goals and OKRs.
  • Promote and implement DesignOps practices to streamline workflows, reduce non-design work for designers, and optimize throughput, tooling, and collaboration across the product organization.

Secondary Functions

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Interaction Design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Industrial Design, Psychology, Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Education:

  • Master's degree or postgraduate studies in HCI, Design Strategy, UX Research, or related fields; certifications in Design Leadership, UX, or DesignOps a plus.
