Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive exterior washing and drying using accepted techniques (two-bucket method, grit guards, pH-balanced shampoos), ensuring paint-safe processes that prevent swirl marks and marring.
  • Execute multi-stage paint correction workflows including clay bar decontamination, compounding, machine polishing (dual-action and rotary), fine polishing, and final finishing to restore gloss and remove defects.
  • Prepare surfaces and apply protective finishes such as paste or liquid waxes, synthetic sealants, and professional-grade ceramic coatings, following manufacturer mixing and cure instructions for long-term protection.
  • Conduct interior deep cleaning: vacuuming, steam extraction, carpet and upholstery shampooing, stain treatment, odor elimination, and fabric protection; restore cloth, vinyl and leather surfaces with appropriate cleaners and conditioners.
  • Perform paint protection film (PPF) and vinyl wrap prep and basic installation support, ensuring surfaces are perfectly decontaminated and free of oils or residue pre-application.
  • Safely apply specialty services such as headlight restoration, engine bay cleaning/detailing, glass polishing, trim restoration, and metal and chrome polishing to dealership and retail standards.
  • Use paint meters, inspection lights, magnifiers, and gloss meters to document paint condition, quantify defects, and develop a consistent correction plan for each vehicle.
  • Conduct pre-detail inspections and create condition reports with photographs and notes to document blemishes, chips, dents, and interior damage prior to work.
  • Meet or exceed shop productivity and throughput targets while maintaining high quality; estimate and track labor time for each job, and communicate any deviations to supervisors or customers promptly.
  • Provide professional customer-facing service: explain recommended services, provide time estimates, discuss results expected, and present post-service care instructions to maximize satisfaction and repeat business.
  • Upsell relevant services (ceramic coatings, paint correction packages, odor elimination, fabric protection, mobile maintenance plans) by explaining benefits and deliverables in plain language.
  • Maintain and operate electrical and pneumatic tools safely—orbital/polishers, extractors, steamers, pressure washers, polishers, vacuums—and report equipment issues for repair or replacement.
  • Handle detergents, solvents, and surface protection products according to SDS/labels; mix chemicals to manufacturer ratios and store hazardous materials in compliance with shop policy.
  • Maintain clean, organized workstations and mobile vans: restock consumables, manage inventory counts, rotate product stock, and label opened containers to reduce waste and cost.
  • Perform final quality control inspections using standardized checklists; correct any misses before vehicle release and obtain customer sign-off or manager approval.
  • Follow environmental and waste disposal regulations: responsibly contain and dispose of wash water, solvents, and filter cartridges per local and state guidelines.
  • Train and mentor junior detailers and new hires on best practices, technique standardization, tool maintenance, and safety protocols; provide hands-on coaching and feedback.
  • Accurately record jobs in shop management or CRM systems: log services performed, parts/consumables used, time spent, and any follow-up recommendations for sales or service departments.
  • Coordinate vehicle movement within dealership/showroom or mobile routing: ensure keys are managed, vehicles are staged correctly for detailing, and delivery to customer or sales floor meets scheduling requirements.
  • Troubleshoot complex appearance issues (deep scratches, heavy oxidation, set-in stains) and consult with painters, body shops, or reconditioning managers to determine next steps.
  • Implement and test new detailing products and processes in controlled trials; provide feedback to management on performance, cost-efficiency, and customer results.
  • Adhere to company SOPs for vehicle security and customer privacy when working on vehicles that may contain personal items or stored data devices.
  • Provide emergency response for last-minute detail requests, trade-show prep, or auction/transport detailing, adjusting schedules while preserving quality standards.
  • Support marketing initiatives by photographing before/after shots, writing short service summaries, and helping maintain social media and online review content showcasing shop capabilities.
