Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive system diagnostics using OEM scan tools, laptop diagnostic suites and code readers to identify root-cause faults in engine control modules (ECUs), transmission control modules (TCMs), anti‑lock braking systems (ABS), airbag systems, and body electronics.
  • Perform systematic electrical troubleshooting on 12V/24V systems using multimeters, oscilloscopes, power probes and wiring diagrams to isolate shorts, opens, intermittent faults, and CAN/J1939 communications failures.
  • Execute engine and driveline diagnostics including compression/leak-down tests, fuel system pressure checks, injector balance, turbocharger evaluation and exhaust after-treatment (DEF/DOC/DPF) systems troubleshooting.
  • Interpret diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), freeze frame data, live sensor streams and waveform captures to build a prioritized repair plan and confirm genuine root cause before parts replacement.
  • Reflash, reprogram, and update ECU/TPCM software and calibrations following OEM procedures, ensuring compatibility, VIN-specific programming, and verification of software updates post-installation.
  • Perform road tests and operational checks to reproduce customer-reported symptoms, validate repairs, and confirm noise, vibration, or harshness (NVH) issues using structured test protocols.
  • Carry out preventive maintenance inspections and system health checks to identify early failure indicators, provide repair recommendations, and support fleet reliability initiatives.
  • Diagnose and service HVAC and climate control systems including compressor operation, refrigerant charging (where certified), and control module diagnostics.
  • Troubleshoot and repair steering, suspension and braking system electronics including electronic stability control (ESC), traction control, and electronically variable damping systems.
  • Execute emissions system diagnostics, repair catalytic converter and sensor issues, and perform pre- and post-repair emissions tests to meet local regulatory requirements.
  • Analyze telematics, fault history logs and remote diagnostic data to recommend corrective actions and support remote troubleshooting efforts for fleet customers.
  • Collaborate with parts, service advisors and warranty administrators to ensure accurate part ordering, warranty claim documentation, and cost-effective repair strategies.
  • Maintain detailed digital service records and diagnostic reports in the dealer management system (DMS) or service management platform, including step‑by‑step findings and verification procedures.
  • Use specialized test equipment such as smoke machines, hydraulic/pneumatic test stands, battery analyzers and alternator test benches to verify system integrity and eliminate false positives.
  • Perform mechanical repairs when required to validate that replaced components resolve the symptom, including component removal/installation, torqueing to spec, and functional verification.
  • Support complex root-cause investigations for repeated failures, engaging OEM technical support and engineering where necessary and documenting reproducible test steps.
  • Follow and enforce safety procedures, lift operation protocols and hazardous materials handling (oil, coolant, refrigerants) to maintain a safe shop environment.
  • Provide technical mentoring and hands‑on training to junior technicians and apprentices on diagnostics methodology, tool usage and OEM repair standards.
  • Participate in service improvement initiatives, feedback loops and continuous learning programs to shorten diagnostic time and improve first-time-fix rates.
  • Maintain calibration records and serviceability of diagnostic tools and equipment; request calibration or repair as needed to preserve measurement accuracy.
  • Manage shop inventory of diagnostic consumables and specialty parts, coordinate vendor tool support and recommend purchases for emerging diagnostic needs.
  • Prepare clear, customer-facing explanations of findings, repair options and expected outcomes to help customers and advisors make informed decisions.
  • Support warranty claim preparation by compiling diagnostic evidence, repair procedures followed, test results and OEM service bulletins referenced.
  • Respond to urgent roadside, field or fleet breakdowns as needed, performing on-site diagnostics, temporary fixes and safe towing recommendations.

Secondary Functions

  • Stay current with OEM technical bulletins, software releases and repair procedure updates and integrate changes into daily diagnostic workflows.
  • Participate in product launch support and field validation activities when new models or major software releases are introduced.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by documenting repeat failure patterns and suggesting corrective actions to product engineering and quality teams.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient with OEM diagnostic software and vehicle scan tools (e.g., Techstream, IDS, STAR, WDS, NEXIQ, Cummins INSITE)—ability to read trouble codes, view live data and perform module bi‑directional tests.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • OEM manufacturer training certifications or completion of formal apprenticeship program.
