A Diesel Fitter (also known as Diesel Mechanic / Heavy Duty Fitter) is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, servicing and maintaining diesel-powered engines, heavy equipment and commercial vehicles. This role requires advanced mechanical and electrical diagnostic skills, knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems, experience with electronic engine controls (ECMs), and a strong safety and documentation mindset. Diesel Fitters work in workshops, yards and in the field on mobile service trucks, supporting fleets, construction, mining, transport and industrial operations.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive diagnostics and troubleshooting of diesel engines, transmissions, differentials and drivetrains using electronic scan tools, multimeters and pressure test equipment to isolate root causes and restore serviceability.
  • Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance (PM) and safety inspections on heavy trucks, earthmoving equipment and construction machinery, following OEM maintenance schedules and fleet program requirements to minimize downtime.
  • Remove, repair and install diesel engine components (cylinder heads, pistons, crankshafts, fuel injection pumps, turbochargers) and rebuild assemblies to OEM torque and tolerance specifications.
  • Diagnose and repair fuel systems including common-rail injectors, high-pressure pumps, fuel lines and filtration systems while adhering to contamination control procedures and fuel-system bleeding protocols.
  • Inspect, test and service air brake systems, compressor assemblies, valves and brake chambers; perform adjustments and replacements to comply with DOT and regulatory safety standards.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems including alternators, starter motors, wiring harnesses, sensors, control modules (ECM) and CAN-bus networks to restore electronic control functions.
  • Service, rebuild and repair hydraulic systems and components (pumps, cylinders, valves, hoses) including leak tracing, pressure testing and component replacement to maintain equipment lifting and movement functionality.
  • Dismantle and rebuild transmissions and torque converters; diagnose bearing wear, gear defects, and clutch/flywheel issues and perform precision assembly and alignment.
  • Fabricate, weld and modify mounts, brackets and assemblies using MIG/TIG welding and oxy-fuel techniques to restore structural integrity or adapt aftermarket components.
  • Perform on-site field repairs and mobile service calls, including emergency roadside assistance for fleet vehicles and heavy machinery, using a fully equipped service truck.
  • Interpret technical service manuals, wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics and OEM bulletins to apply correct repair procedures, torque values and alignment tolerances.
  • Install and calibrate electronic emission control systems, DEF dosing units, exhaust aftertreatment components and related sensors in compliance with emissions regulations.
  • Conduct post-repair road tests / function checks and verify performance against acceptance criteria; document test results and sign off on completed work orders.
  • Maintain parts inventory and issue/receive components using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS); prepare accurate job cards and parts requisitions to support workflow efficiency.
  • Apply rigging and lifting techniques to safely move engines and heavy assemblies; use cranes, hoists and engine stands while following lockout/tagout and confined-space procedures.
  • Troubleshoot and repair heating, ventilation and auxiliary systems (heater cores, cooling systems, radiators and thermostats) to prevent overheating and maintain operator comfort.
  • Clean and prepare components for inspection using solvent and pressure wash procedures while managing waste and fluids in accordance with environmental and hazardous materials regulations.
  • Mentor apprentices and less experienced technicians by demonstrating diagnostic approaches, safe work practices and correct use of specialized tools and equipment.
  • Communicate clearly with dispatchers, supervisors and customers to provide repair estimates, status updates and recommended preventative measures that reduce repeat failures.
  • Ensure workshop compliance with health, safety and environmental policies; complete pre-shift safety checks, hazard reports and incident documentation as required.
  • Program and update ECM software and calibrations, perform parameter resets and apply service bulletins and firmware updates in coordination with OEM technical support.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities such as root cause analysis of recurring failures, cost reduction initiatives and standard work updates to increase fleet uptime.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist purchasing and inventory teams by providing technical input on parts specifications, fitment alternatives and critical spares lists to optimize stock levels.
  • Contribute to the fleet maintenance strategy by identifying lifecycle trends, recommending refurbishment schedules and estimating repair vs. replace decisions.
  • Support warranty claims by preparing diagnostic evidence, repair documentation and liaising with OEM representatives to recover eligible expenses.
  • Maintain and update detailed records in CMMS/ERP systems including labor hours, parts consumed, serial numbers and repair histories for asset tracking and compliance.
  • Participate in on-call rotation to provide after-hours emergency repairs and rapid response services, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
  • Provide training sessions and toolbox talks focused on safe operation, preventive checks and basic troubleshooting for equipment operators and site staff.
  • Collaborate with engineering and project teams to develop retrofit kits, custom brackets or machine modifications required for specialized site conditions.
  • Support environmental compliance by managing drains, spill kits and used-oil disposal processes and ensuring appropriate documentation for audits.
  • Assist in workshop housekeeping and tool control procedures to maintain an organized shop floor and reduce downtime searching for tools or components.
  • Contribute to pilot programs testing new diagnostic tools, aftermarket products or maintenance technologies and provide feedback on field performance.

Required Skills & Competencies

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (required)
  • Completion of basic technical training or trade certificate in automotive/diesel mechanics preferred

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or Diploma in Diesel Technology, Heavy Vehicle Mechanics, or equivalent trade school qualification
  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program (journeyman-level preferred)
  • Additional certifications (OEM-specific training, ASE Heavy Truck, NVQ Level 3 or equivalent)

  • 5+ years experience diagnosing and rebuilding diesel engines, transmissions and hydraulic systems for senior roles.
  • Experience with fleet maintenance programs, CMMS, DOT inspections and field service operations is highly desirable.
  • Prior experience performing on-site mobile repairs and emergency roadside recovery is a plus.
