Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute scheduled local and regional distribution routes safely and on time, delivering and picking up goods between distribution centers, retail partners, and commercial customers while maintaining delivery accuracy and professionalism.
  • Perform pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip vehicle inspections and complete all required vehicle logbooks, inspection forms, and maintenance reports to ensure roadworthiness and minimize downtime.
  • Load and unload pallets, boxed goods, and miscellaneous freight using appropriate equipment (hand truck, pallet jack, dollies), ensuring secure cargo handling to prevent damage and loss.
  • Use handheld scanners, mobile devices, and TMS (transportation management systems) to scan shipments, confirm deliveries, update order status in real time, and capture required signatures and proof of delivery (POD).
  • Adhere to DOT regulations, company safety policies, local traffic laws, and hazardous materials handling requirements when applicable, reporting any incidents or violations immediately to management.
  • Plan and optimize daily routes in coordination with dispatch to minimize drive time, reduce fuel consumption, and meet tight delivery windows while maintaining service quality.
  • Communicate proactively with dispatch, warehouse staff, and customers regarding ETA changes, delivery exceptions, damaged or missing items, and any route or load issues that may affect service levels.
  • Verify shipment contents against pick lists, manifests, and delivery documentation upon pickup and delivery; note and report discrepancies, shortages, or damaged goods in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Handle customer interactions professionally at delivery sites, resolving minor issues on the spot where possible and escalating service problems per company policy to maintain positive customer relationships.
  • Secure, strap, or blanket freight as necessary for transport to prevent shifting, overflow, or damage during transit and follow proper staging procedures at warehouse and dock locations.
  • Complete accurate time and attendance, fuel, mileage, and expense reports using company systems, ensuring compliance with payroll and reimbursement processes.
  • Perform light vehicle maintenance tasks such as checking oil, tire pressure, lights, and fluid levels, and coordinate repairs with fleet services to prevent breakdowns and extend vehicle life.
  • Follow company procedures for returns, backhauls, and reverse logistics, including safe collection, documentation, and accurate transfer of returned merchandise back to the warehouse or processing center.
  • Enforce site-specific access, security, and delivery protocols at customer facilities, including identification checks, gate procedures, and adherence to PPE and safety rules required by customer sites.
  • Support cross-dock activities by staging loads, assisting with order consolidation, and communicating load statuses to enable efficient flow through the distribution network.
  • Maintain clean, organized vehicle interiors and exteriors to reflect brand standards and help with quick inspections and efficient loading during the workday.
  • Participate in scheduled safety trainings, toolbox talks, and performance reviews; incorporate feedback into daily driving and delivery practices to continually reduce accidents and claims.
  • Use basic navigation and mapping tools to identify alternate routes during traffic delays, construction, or emergencies to preserve delivery schedules and service commitments.
  • Follow protocols for handling temperature-sensitive, fragile, or high-value goods, including securing appropriate equipment and documenting condition at pickup and delivery.
  • Assist warehouse teams with light palletizing, labeling, and staging when delivery schedule permits to improve workflow and support high-volume periods.
  • Accurately document and report all incidents such as accidents, cargo damage, theft, or near-misses in accordance with company incident reporting standards and cooperate with investigations.
  • Maintain compliance with company drug and alcohol policies, random testing programs, and required licensing and certification renewals to remain eligible for driving assignments.
  • Provide input on route efficiency, equipment needs, and safety improvements based on firsthand field observations to support continuous operational improvement.

Secondary Functions

  • Support inventory reconciliation at pickup and drop-off points by providing delivery counts and discrepancy notes to inventory control teams.
  • Assist with weekend or off-hour deliveries and emergency pickup requests during peak seasons or critical customer outages.
  • Participate in pilot programs for route optimization software, telematics, and new handheld devices; provide feedback on practicality and usability.
  • Help train new drivers on company procedures, route nuances, and customer-specific delivery requirements when requested by supervisors.
  • Aid the maintenance team by notifying fleet management of recurring vehicle issues and providing detailed reports after trips that may indicate mechanical problems.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Valid driver's license appropriate to vehicle class (Class B required; Class A preferred for regional distribution) and a clean driving record.
  • Proven experience with DOT regulations, hours-of-service rules, and electronic logging devices (ELDs) or e-log systems.
  • Hands-on proficiency with handheld barcode scanners, mobile delivery apps, and transportation management systems (TMS).
  • Safe operation of pallet jacks, dollies, and other manual material-handling equipment; forklift experience is a plus where applicable.
  • Strong map-reading and GPS navigation skills, including use of route-planning and traffic-avoidance tools.
  • Ability to perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and complete basic vehicle maintenance checks (fluids, tire checks, light replacements).
