Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Operate powered industrial trucks (counterbalance forklift, reach truck, pallet jack, stand-up and sit-down forklifts) to safely and efficiently load, unload, stack, and stage inbound and outbound freight in accordance with company procedures and OSHA/DOT regulations.
- Inspect trailers and containers prior to loading/unloading, confirm cleanliness and suitability for product, verify tare weights and trailer condition, and report any damage, leaks, or contamination to supervision.
- Secure, block and brace loads inside trailers using straps, load bars, and shoring materials to prevent product movement in transit and ensure compliance with weight distribution and DOT regulations.
- Read and verify shipping manifests, bills of lading, packing lists and load plans; reconcile counted quantities with paperwork and update the Warehouse Management System (WMS) or RF scanner accordingly.
- Stage outbound shipments according to carrier instructions and load schedules, prioritizing expedited loads, temperature-sensitive product and high-turn SKUs to meet pick-up windows and carrier cutoff times.
- Perform routine pre-shift and post-shift equipment inspections (fuel/oil/fluids, forks, mast, tires, brakes, safety devices) and complete maintenance logs; tag out and report defective equipment immediately to maintenance.
- Operate yard hostler or yard tractor to move trailers between dock doors, staging yards and storage locations, following traffic patterns, coupling/uncoupling procedures, and company safety policies.
- Load and unload pallets, skids, crates, and bulk product with attention to stacking patterns, load heights, and pallet integrity to minimize product damage and facilitate safe warehouse flow.
- Use RF scanning equipment, barcode scanners and WMS handhelds to cycle count, confirm SKU locations, capture serial/lot numbers and record inventory adjustments in real time.
- Carry out trailer pre-trip and post-trip inspections and complete required documentation for regulatory compliance and carrier records.
- Provide hands-on assistance during dock bridging operations, aligning trailers with dock levelers and employing dock plates safely while communicating with drivers to ensure safe access and egress.
- Coordinate with shipping, receiving and production teams to manage peak load periods, prioritize throughput, and reduce detention time by communicating status updates and ETA changes to carriers.
- Follow hazardous materials handling procedures for loading/unloading, marking, segregation and placarding as required; ensure proper PPE is used and hazardous shipments are documented and stored safely.
- Perform load sequencing and pallet building for optimized truck loading, ensuring correct sequence of delivery stops and minimizing re-handling at delivery locations.
- Complete cycle counts and participate in inventory audits by retrieving pallets, scanning, and reconciling variances; investigate and report recurring discrepancies.
- Assist in training new operators on equipment operation, safety protocols, load securement techniques, and standard operating procedures, including testing during on-the-job training.
- Execute emergency procedures during spills, accidents or equipment malfunctions by securing the area, notifying supervisors, and assisting with incident documentation and root cause identification.
- Maintain clean, organized dock and staging areas by removing debris, securing loose materials, and ensuring dock seals, bumpers and levelers are unobstructed to reduce trip/slip hazards.
- Load and operate specialized lift equipment (platform lifts, scissor lifts, pallet inverters) for non-standard loads, ensuring safe use and compliance with manufacturer safety instructions.
- Liaise with drivers and carriers at the gate and dock: verify carrier credentials, check delivery paperwork, coordinate door assignments and manage driver check-in/check-out procedures.
- Perform light mechanical service such as topping off hydraulic fluids, charging batteries, cleaning forks, and changing filters under direction of maintenance crew to keep equipment operational.
- Conduct daily safety checks and toolbox talks on dock operations, emphasizing proper PPE, blind-spot awareness, trailer creep prevention, and pedestrian separation in high-traffic areas.
- Monitor and control load weights, verify pallet weights and label weight distribution to prevent overloading equipment and trailers; escalate any overweight issues to supervisors immediately.
- Use handheld tablets or mobile devices to complete digital signatures, scan proof of delivery (POD), attach photos of damaged goods, and upload incident reports to company systems.
Secondary Functions
- Assist shipping clerks and dispatchers with scheduling, prioritization, and documentation during peak outbound periods and ad-hoc carrier changes.
- Support inventory control with targeted cycle counting, pallet location audits, and SKU reconciliation when requested by the inventory team.
- Help implement continuous improvement projects on the dock such as layout changes, dock-to-yard traffic flow improvements and load securement standardization.
- Participate in cross-functional safety audits and recommend corrective actions based on dock observations and near-miss reporting.
- Provide backup support for order picking or staging when volumes require additional labor on short notice.
- Collaborate with maintenance to schedule routine lift equipment servicing and coordinate downtime to minimize operational disruption.
- Maintain accurate daily logs of loads moved, equipment hours, fuel/battery use and safety incidents for supervisory review.
- Participate in training initiatives to stay current on OSHA, DOT, and company-specific safety and operational procedures.
