Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead concept development and creative vision for documentary projects, including structuring narrative arcs, defining themes, and developing treatment and sizzle reels that communicate the film’s editorial direction and audience appeal.

  • Lead fundraising and revenue development activities including writing grants, preparing pitch decks for co-producers, negotiating broadcast and distribution agreements, and cultivating relationships with foundations, public broadcasters, and private investors.
  • Schedule and coordinate all production activities: create shooting schedules, call sheets, location plans, travel logistics, and contingency strategies to ensure smooth field operations and compliance with local regulations.
  • Cast, recruit, and manage crews and creative collaborators including cinematographers, sound recordists, field producers, editors, composers, legal counsel, and cultural consultants to ensure high standards of craft and ethical representation.
  • Oversee all aspects of on-location production: direct interviews and scenes, ensure high-quality image and sound capture, supervise lighting and camera setups, and troubleshoot technical and logistical issues in dynamic field conditions.
  • Conduct sensitive on-camera interviews using best-practice techniques to elicit authentic testimony while practicing trauma-informed approaches and clear consent protocols for participants.
  • Supervise post-production workflows: oversee editorial strategy, guide editorial cuts, manage versioning for broadcasters and platforms, supervise music licensing and scoring, coordinate sound design, and approve final color grading and mastering for delivery.
  • Ensure legal clearances and rights management: secure releases for talent and locations, clear archival footage, negotiate music and rights agreements, and coordinate with legal advisors to mitigate clearance and defamation risks.
  • Design and implement archival and metadata systems for project materials, ensuring proper cataloguing of footage, transcripts, research notes, and rights information to support current production and future reuse.
  • Create festival and distribution strategies including identifying target festivals, preparing submission materials, negotiating festival and broadcast terms, and developing marketing and outreach plans to reach intended audiences.
  • Manage delivery specifications and technical mastering for diverse platforms (theatrical, broadcast, SVOD, educational, festival) including codecs, captioning, subtitling, and accessibility requirements.
  • Direct and oversee promotional content creation — trailers, social media clips, press kits, and behind-the-scenes materials — to support marketing, audience-building and distribution campaigns.
  • Lead outreach, impact and engagement strategies for issue-driven documentaries: coordinate community screenings, educational partnerships, and campaign collaborations with NGOs, advocacy groups, and funders to maximize social impact.
  • Maintain rigorous ethical standards and editorial processes, including fact-checking, source verification, conflict-of-interest disclosure, and fair representation of subjects, especially when reporting on vulnerable populations.
  • Mentor and manage junior production staff and interns, delegate responsibilities, set clear performance expectations, and foster a collaborative production culture that prioritizes safety, inclusion, and creative excellence.
  • Analyze viewer and distribution data post-release to inform future project strategy, evaluate festival and broadcast performance, and report outcomes to funders and stakeholders.
  • Build and sustain a professional network of producers, commissioners, distributors, festival programmers, journalists, and funders to facilitate co-productions, distribution deals, and ongoing career opportunities.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Professional documentary directing and producing experience with a demonstrable reel or portfolio of completed short or feature-length projects.
  • Cinematography: hands-on camera operation and composition skills across DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, cinema cameras and an understanding of lenses, frame rates and exposure for narrative nonfiction.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Film Production, Journalism, Media Studies, Communications, Anthropology, History, or equivalent practical experience in documentary production.
