Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Develop, review and deliver detailed drilling programs and well construction designs including well trajectory, casing and cementing programs, casing seats, anti-collision plans, and contingency plans to ensure safe and efficient well delivery.
- Perform detailed BHA (Bottom Hole Assembly) design and selection for vertical, directional and horizontal wells, coordinating with MWD/LWD and directional drilling teams to optimize performance and minimize risk of stuck pipe and vibration issues.
- Specify and manage drilling fluid programs in partnership with mud engineers, including mud type, properties, additives, hole cleaning strategy and environmental disposal requirements to maintain wellbore stability and downhole tool performance.
- Prepare and present drilling engineering deliverables and pre-spud briefs such as Drilling Program, Well Program, Hazard Identification (HAZID), HAZOP inputs, and Well Execution Procedures to stakeholders and rig management.
- Execute drilling operations oversight and provide real-time operational support to rig teams, making engineering decisions to manage downhole events, directional control, torque-and-drag and hole cleaning, and to minimize non-productive time (NPT).
- Lead well control planning and implementation, including development of kick detection and response procedures, emergency well control plans, blowout preventer (BOP) configuration review, and ensuring rig crew certifications and drills are completed.
- Perform risk assessments, formal risk registers, and bow-tie analyses for well activities; design mitigation measures and contingency plans for key well construction hazards including shallow gas, lost circulation, and stuck well scenarios.
- Calculate and optimize drilling hydraulics and equivalent circulating density (ECD) for all phases of the well using industry-standard software and hand calculations; advise on choke management and pressure management during drilling and casing operations.
- Manage well cost estimating, budgeting, and forecasting through tender reviews, daily cost reporting, and change-order evaluations; identify opportunities for cost savings and operational efficiencies without compromising safety or integrity.
- Prepare and review drilling tender documents, scope of work, technical bid evaluations and participate in vendor selection for drilling services, rigs, bit runs and downhole tools, ensuring contractual compliance and technical fit.
- Coordinate and integrate directional drilling and survey programs, including wellpath planning, dogleg severity control, and collision avoidance, working closely with directional drilling specialists and wireline/MWD providers.
- Implement well integrity management practices, including casing design verification, pressure testing programs, cement evaluation, and long-term wellbarrier verification to meet regulatory requirements and company standards.
- Conduct post-well technical reviews and lessons learned sessions; prepare detailed well reports, technical memoranda and performance analytics to support continuous improvement and knowledge transfer across the well engineering team.
- Interface closely with subsurface, reservoir, production and completions teams to optimize well placement, production potential and completion design, ensuring that drilling objectives support field development plans and reservoir targets.
- Supervise and mentor junior drilling engineers and field engineers, delegating responsibilities, reviewing technical deliverables, and building in-house drilling engineering capability.
- Ensure compliance with local and international HSE regulations, environmental permits and industry best practices; lead incident investigations and corrective action tracking for drilling-related events.
- Oversee and coordinate wireline, logging, coring, testing and casing-running operations in the well program and ensure data acquisition deliverables are met for reservoir and formation evaluation.
- Apply and validate drilling engineering models and software tools (e.g., Landmark WellPlan/OpenWells, Schlumberger Techlog, Compass, WellCat, Quorum, OFM) for trajectory modeling, hydraulics, casing design and torque-and-drag simulations.
- Optimize drill-string and tubular selection based on mechanical analysis, fatigue life, torsional and tensile loads, and completion strategy, balancing performance with cost and lead-time constraints.
- Support well site supervision during rig up and rig down activities, coordinate logistics and contractor interfaces, and ensure technical specifications are communicated and executed by rig crews.
- Manage drilling data collection, quality assurance and handover into well data systems; ensure accurate daily well reports, drilling logs, and electronic well files for future operations and regulatory compliance.
- Lead corrosion, erosion and tubular integrity assessments pre- and post-drilling to define inspection intervals, NDT requirements and any remedial interventions during the well lifecycle.
- Collaborate with well intervention and workover teams to plan safe rigless operations and wells needing remedial drilling, sidetracks or re-entries, including rig selection and risk mitigation planning.
- Monitor and report key performance indicators (KPIs) such as rate of penetration (ROP), non-productive time (NPT), drilling cost per meter, and well delivery schedule, providing regular updates to project and asset teams.
- Assist in developing and implementing digital drilling initiatives, real-time monitoring dashboards, automated alarms and decision support tools to improve drilling performance and reduce operational risk.

Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent engineering discipline.
Preferred Education:
- Master's degree (MSc) in Petroleum/Drilling Engineering or MBA for senior roles.
- Professional certifications (e.g., IADC WellSharp, IWCF Well Control, SPE membership) strongly preferred.
