Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Create and deliver structured, learner-centered driving lessons that cover vehicle control, traffic laws, hazard perception, defensive driving, and eco-driving techniques to prepare candidates for practical and theory exams.
  • Conduct initial assessments of new learners to determine skill level, tailor lesson plans, set measurable learning objectives, and document progress in learner records.
  • Deliver one-to-one and small group training both in-vehicle and classroom settings, adjusting instructional style to accommodate different learning needs, anxiety levels, and language proficiencies.
  • Provide clear, calm, and constructive feedback immediately after driving sessions, identifying strengths, areas for improvement, and actionable next steps to accelerate learner development and confidence.
  • Prepare candidates for official driving tests and licensing requirements by conducting mock tests, familiarizing learners with test routes and procedures, and offering targeted remediation on weak areas.
  • Maintain current knowledge of national and local traffic regulations, licensing standards, testing criteria, and industry best practices; update lesson content routinely to reflect regulatory changes.
  • Execute pre- and post-lesson vehicle safety checks, ensure in-car dual controls are functional, and report or arrange for vehicle maintenance to maintain a safe training environment.
  • Manage scheduling, booking, cancellations, and rescheduling of lessons using digital booking systems, and optimize route planning to reduce learner time and travel costs.
  • Record and maintain detailed training logs, lesson plans, test outcomes, and assessment records in compliance with company policies and local regulatory bodies; ensure confidentiality and data protection.
  • Use a variety of teaching aids and technology—such as in-car cameras, telematics, driving simulators, and digital learning platforms—to enhance instruction and evidence learner progress.
  • Coach learners on responsible driving behavior, risk awareness, distraction reduction (e.g., mobile phone use), alcohol/drug impairment effects, and strategies for driving in adverse weather and complex traffic conditions.
  • Support remedial training for learners with identified difficulties (e.g., nervous drivers, older learners, learners with special educational needs), developing individualized plans and liaising with external specialists when required.
  • Liaise with parents, guardians, employers, or fleet managers to provide progress reports, recommend additional training, and discuss licensing or employment-related driving requirements.
  • Assess and certify learner competency against official standards when authorized; provide written recommendations for test readiness and next-step certification.
  • Promote the business through community outreach, school partnerships, road-safety events, social media presence, and positive public relations to drive learner recruitment and retention.
  • Enforce professional standards and safe driving practices while demonstrating exemplary driving behavior at all times as a role model for learners.
  • Handle administrative duties such as invoicing, payment processing, issuing receipts, and reconciling training session records in alignment with company procedures.
  • Participate in continuing professional development (CPD), attend examiner training, safety workshops, and internal quality assurance reviews to maintain instructor accreditation and improve instructional techniques.
  • Support and mentor newly qualified instructors, providing training on lesson planning, assessment techniques, and organizational policies to maintain consistent teaching quality.
  • Respond appropriately to on-road incidents involving learners (near-misses, collisions, breakdowns) by following emergency procedures, completing incident reports, and offering post-incident debriefs focused on learning outcomes.
  • Implement and uphold safeguarding, equality, and inclusion practices ensuring a supportive, respectful, and accessible learning environment for learners of all backgrounds and abilities.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with local marketing activities such as distributing flyers, attending school career days, and contributing content for the company website and social media to increase brand visibility.
  • Support fleet and operations teams by providing driver performance reports, advising on vehicle safety upgrades, and helping to design company driver safety policies.
  • Contribute to curriculum refinement by sharing field insights, learner feedback, and assessment trends to improve training modules and testing preparation materials.
  • Participate in quality audits and internal reviews; provide evidence of teaching effectiveness and liaise with compliance teams to address any gaps in instructional records.
  • Offer introductory workshops on advanced driving techniques (e.g., skid control, motorway driving) for advanced learners and corporate clients.
  • Coordinate with external bodies (testing centers, licensing authorities, schools) to arrange assessments, clarify requirements, and ensure learners meet pre-test eligibility.
  • Maintain and organize training materials, classroom resources, and first-aid kits; ensure training vehicle documentation (insurance, V5, MOT) is up to date and available.
  • Provide ad-hoc consultancy to local organizations on driver risk assessment, safe journey planning, and driver recruitment assessments.
  • Monitor and report on key performance indicators such as pass rates, lesson completion, punctuality, and customer satisfaction to support operational decision-making.
  • Support seasonal campaigns and promotions, adjusting lesson packages and offers to align with business targets and learner demand.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Valid full driving licence free of serious endorsements and appropriate to the vehicle type (manual and/or automatic).
  • Recognized driving instructor qualification (e.g., Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), Certified Driving Instructor, state DMV instructor certification) and current instructor registration where applicable.
  • Deep knowledge of national and local driving laws, testing standards, and licensing procedures.
  • Proficiency in conducting structured assessments, scoring practical tests, and producing detailed competency reports.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; evidence of stable educational background.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Education, Transport Management, Automotive Technology, Psychology, or related fields.
  • Additional certifications in teaching, adult education, or driver behaviour analysis are a plus.
