- Operate drones for point-to-point and multi-drop delivery missions, monitoring telemetry, video feeds, battery levels, and flight status in real-time to maintain VLOS/BVLOS mission integrity and to respond to anomalies.
- Execute safe payload loading, securement, and release or handoff procedures for small parcels, medical supplies, or food items while ensuring payload balance and integrity during transit.
- Perform post-flight inspections and routine maintenance including firmware upgrades, sensor calibration, propeller checks, and battery health assessments, recording all maintenance activities in the fleet management system.
- Manage battery lifecycle operations: charge/discharge cycles, storage, mismatch mitigation, and disposal/transport of LiPo or similar batteries to maintain safety and maximize runtime.
- Apply FAA Part 107 rules (and other applicable regional/UAS regulations), manage waivers and permissions, file NOTAMs when required, and coordinate with local ATC or authorities for controlled airspace operations.
- Execute emergency procedures for lost-link, GPS failure, or critical battery situations, including safe return-to-home, landing zone diversion, or controlled payload jettison as specified in emergency response plans.
- Monitor weather, NOTAMs, TFRs, and local conditions pre-flight and continuously during operations, rescheduling or cancelling missions when conditions exceed operational envelopes.
- Troubleshoot avionics, communications, telemetry, and power systems on-site and escalate complex mechanical or software faults to maintenance engineers, minimizing downtime using diagnosis logs and error codes.
- Capture and log flight telemetry, camera imagery, and delivery confirmation data (photos, time-stamps, customer acknowledgements) into the delivery management platform for auditing and reconciliation.
- Communicate proactively with customers, on-site personnel, or distribution hubs regarding delivery windows, access instructions, or missed delivery attempts and coordinate re-delivery actions.
- Maintain and audit inventories of drones, spare parts, batteries, and payload containers; coordinate replenishment and logistics with procurement to minimize fleet downtime.
- Implement and enforce safety and SOP compliance during operations, conducting area hazard assessments (landing/takeoff zones), crowd management, and ensuring privacy protections for residents and property.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives: analyze delivery success rates, flight efficiency, battery utilization, and incident reports to refine SOPs and optimize route planning for cost and time savings.
- Train and mentor junior drone operators, providing classroom and hands-on instruction in emergency procedures, pre/post-flight maintenance, mission planning tools, and company safety culture.
- Support BVLOS operations where permitted: operate under waivers, manage detect-and-avoid processes, and coordinate with remote visual observers or ground-based surveillance systems.
- Prepare and submit incident/near-miss reports, safety investigations, root-cause analysis and corrective action plans, working with safety teams and regulators as needed.
- Manage geofencing and digital airspace restrictions within mission planning tools to prevent flights over restricted or sensitive areas and to ensure compliance with privacy and local ordinances.
- Integrate drone operations with warehouse management or logistics platforms (WMS/TMS/APIs), ensuring seamless order assignment, status updates and proof-of-delivery transmission.
- Conduct periodic audits of operational data, flight logs, and maintenance records to ensure regulatory readiness for inspections and to support insurance and liability requirements.
- Coordinate site surveys and landing zone preparations at new or recurring sites, conducting ground risk assessments, marking landing pads, and securing permissions from property owners or stakeholders.
- Participate in cross-functional pilots and deployments with product, operations, and engineering teams to evaluate new payload attachments, docking solutions, or autonomy software and provide operational feedback.
- Maintain professional and up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, airspace rule changes, and advancements in UAS hardware/software to support strategic scaling of drone delivery services.
Secondary Functions
- Assist operations managers with scheduling, shift coverage planning, and daily manifests to meet fluctuating delivery volumes.
- Support customer service teams by providing technical delivery details, flight status updates, and evidence for delivery confirmations or disputes.
- Help maintain training materials, SOP documents and safety briefings for new sites and seasonal staffing changes.
- Participate in community outreach and public relations efforts to educate stakeholders on drone safety, privacy safeguards, and local benefits of drone logistics.
- Support ad-hoc field experiments, data collection, and pilot programs to validate new delivery methods, payload types, or routing algorithms.
