Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Manage the end-to-end e-invoicing and digital reporting processes, ensuring timely and accurate submission to government platforms in compliance with global mandates (e.g., CFDI, SII, SAF-T).
  • Monitor, reconcile, and analyze large volumes of transactional data from various ERP systems (SAP, Oracle) to ensure completeness and accuracy for indirect tax determination and reporting.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and primary point of contact for troubleshooting and resolving issues related to the tax determination engine (e.g., Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE, Vertex, Avalara).
  • Configure, test, and maintain tax rules, rates, and exemption certificate data within the tax engine and connected financial systems to ensure precise tax calculations.
  • Collaborate with IT and business stakeholders to define requirements, perform user acceptance testing (UAT), and support the implementation of new tax technology solutions and system upgrades.
  • Stay current with evolving global e-tax regulations and digital compliance requirements, assessing their impact on the company's systems and processes and recommending necessary changes.
  • Develop and maintain complex data models and custom reports using tools like SQL, Alteryx, or Power BI to support indirect tax compliance, audit defense, and strategic planning.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of indirect tax returns (VAT, GST, Sales & Use Tax) generated from tax automation software, ensuring data integrity and compliance.
  • Support internal and external tax audits by providing detailed data extracts, system documentation, and clear explanations of tax calculation logic and reporting workflows.
  • Document and continuously improve standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all e-tax processes, system configurations, and internal controls to ensure consistency and knowledge retention.
  • Analyze and resolve tax-related data discrepancies and transactional exceptions, performing root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
  • Lead or participate in tax technology projects, including requirements gathering, solution design, testing, and providing post-implementation support to ensure project success.
  • Translate complex tax law and regulations into clear, actionable functional and technical specifications for system configuration and development by the IT team.
  • Manage user access, security roles, and permissions for various tax applications, ensuring adherence to internal control policies and data privacy standards.
  • Perform detailed variance analysis on tax accruals and payments, investigating significant fluctuations and presenting findings and recommendations to tax leadership.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and perform exploratory data analysis to uncover insights and support strategic tax initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of the organization's long-term tax technology strategy and roadmap.
  • Collaborate with various business units, including Sales, Procurement, and Logistics, to translate their data needs into clear requirements for the tax technology team.
  • Participate actively in sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and other agile ceremonies within the tax and IT teams to drive project velocity.
  • Provide training and create support materials for business users on tax-related systems and processes to promote self-service and operational efficiency.
  • Liaise with external software vendors and implementation partners to manage support tickets, escalate critical issues, and stay informed about upcoming system enhancements.
  • Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and build dashboards to track the effectiveness and efficiency of tax technology and compliance processes.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep proficiency with tax determination engines and compliance software (e.g., Vertex, Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE, Avalara, Sovos).
  • Hands-on experience with major ERP systems (SAP S/4HANA, Oracle Fusion/EBS, NetSuite), specifically their finance and tax-related modules.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including complex formulas, PivotTables, Power Query, and data modeling.
  • Strong practical experience writing and executing queries in SQL for data extraction, transformation, and analysis.
  • Proven ability to use data analytics and visualization tools such as Alteryx, Power BI, or Tableau to create reports and dashboards.
  • In-depth knowledge of global e-invoicing, e-reporting standards (e.g., SAF-T, SII, Peppol), and real-time reporting requirements.
  • Experience managing exemption certificate data and systems (e.g., CertCapture).
  • Solid understanding of indirect tax principles, including Value Added Tax (VAT), Goods and Services Tax (GST), and U.S. Sales & Use Tax.
  • Experience participating in the full lifecycle of system implementation projects, from requirements gathering and design to user acceptance testing (UAT).
  • Ability to read, interpret, and translate technical specifications and system architecture documents into business process impacts.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree

Preferred Education:
