Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Receive, unload, and stage incoming shipments of electronic waste from various sources, ensuring proper handling and documentation.
  • Manually sort a diverse range of electronic materials, including computers, servers, mobile devices, and peripherals, into specific categories for downstream processing.
  • Perform systematic de-manufacturing and disassembly of electronic devices using various hand tools and power tools to separate components like circuit boards, plastics, metals, and wiring.
  • Identify and carefully segregate hazardous materials, such as batteries (Lithium-Ion, NiCad), mercury-containing lamps, and cathode-ray tubes (CRTs), according to strict environmental and safety protocols.
  • Operate material handling equipment, including forklifts, pallet jacks, and dollies, to safely and efficiently move gaylords, pallets, and bins of material throughout the facility.
  • Weigh, document, and label sorted materials accurately to maintain precise inventory control and ensure proper tracking for compliance and billing purposes.
  • Execute data destruction procedures on hard drives and other data-bearing devices using approved software wiping, degaussing, or physical shredding methods.
  • Maintain meticulous logs and records for all processed materials and data-sanitized assets, ensuring a clear and auditable chain of custody.
  • Test and triage incoming IT assets (laptops, desktops, servers) to assess their functional status and cosmetic condition, determining their potential for remarketing, refurbishment, or recycling.
  • Prepare and package sorted commodities and finished goods for shipment to downstream vendors or customers, ensuring loads are secure and properly labeled.
  • Adhere to and champion all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and industry-specific standards (e.g., R2, e-Stewards).
  • Consistently wear and maintain all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including steel-toed boots, safety glasses, gloves, and high-visibility vests.
  • Operate and monitor processing equipment such as balers, shredders, and conveyor systems, performing basic troubleshooting and reporting any malfunctions.
  • Perform quality control checks on sorted materials to ensure they meet the specifications required by downstream partners.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workstation and contribute to the overall housekeeping of the processing floor, following 5S or similar lean manufacturing principles.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in conducting regular inventory cycle counts and full physical inventory audits to ensure system accuracy.
  • Participate actively in daily safety briefings, team meetings, and continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing efficiency and safety.
  • Support the receiving department with identifying and logging assets upon arrival, verifying against client manifests.
  • Collaborate with the testing and repair departments by providing a steady stream of pre-sorted, viable equipment for further evaluation.
  • Provide support for special client projects, including on-site pickups or customized processing and reporting requirements.
  • Train new team members on proper sorting, disassembly, and safety procedures as directed by a supervisor.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Material Handling Equipment Operation: Certified or able to be certified to operate a forklift, electric pallet jack, and other warehouse machinery.
  • Tool Proficiency: Skilled in the use of common hand tools (screwdrivers, drills, pry bars) and power tools for efficient disassembly.
  • Component Identification: Ability to visually identify different types of electronic components, plastics, and metals.
  • Data Destruction Methods: Familiarity with data sanitization standards and the operation of shredders, degaussers, or wiping software.
  • Basic Computer Skills: Ability to use inventory management software, scanners, and basic office applications to log data and track assets.
  • Safety Protocol Adherence: Knowledge of OSHA standards, proper lifting techniques, and procedures for handling hazardous materials.
