Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Actively supervise and engage with children during all indoor and outdoor activities, ensuring their safety, well-being, and active participation in planned learning experiences.
  • Collaborate with the Lead Teacher to implement a developmentally appropriate, play-based curriculum that fosters cognitive, social, emotional, and physical growth for each child.
  • Assist children with daily personal care routines, including diapering, toilet training, handwashing, and mealtimes, while promoting independence and healthy habits.
  • Create and maintain a clean, organized, and inviting classroom environment that is rich with materials and opportunities for exploration and learning.
  • Guide children in developing positive social skills and peer relationships through modeling, coaching, and implementing positive behavior management strategies.
  • Observe, document, and report on individual children's developmental progress, milestones, interests, and any areas of concern to the Lead Teacher.
  • Foster a nurturing, inclusive, and respectful classroom atmosphere where each child feels valued, safe, and emotionally secure.
  • Prepare, distribute, and clean up materials for lessons, art projects, and other classroom activities as directed by the instructional team.
  • Lead small group activities, story time, and songs under the guidance of the Lead Teacher, adapting your approach to meet the diverse needs of the learners.
  • Facilitate smooth transitions between activities, such as moving from circle time to outdoor play or from lunch to nap time, using positive and engaging techniques.
  • Provide one-on-one support to children who may need extra assistance or encouragement to participate fully in classroom activities.
  • Ensure the health and safety of all children by consistently following all health protocols, sanitization procedures, and emergency drills.
  • Assist in the preparation and service of nutritious meals and snacks, adhering to dietary restrictions and promoting positive eating habits.
  • Communicate warmly and professionally with parents and guardians during drop-off and pick-up, providing brief, positive updates about their child's day.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the Lead Teacher in maintaining accurate classroom records, including daily attendance, meal counts, and incident/accident reports.
  • Actively participate in staff meetings, professional development workshops, and ongoing training to stay current with best practices in early childhood education.

  • Assist in the regular inventory, maintenance, and organization of classroom supplies, equipment, and learning materials.

  • Escort children safely to and from various locations within the facility, such as the playground, enrichment classes, or the front office.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Pediatric First Aid and CPR Certification: Current certification is often required or must be obtained shortly after hire.
  • Knowledge of Child Development: Strong understanding of the developmental stages (cognitive, social, physical, emotional) of children aged 0-5.
  • State Licensing Standards: Familiarity with the specific health, safety, and educational regulations for licensed childcare centers in your state.
  • Curriculum Implementation: Experience assisting with play-based, emergent, or theme-based early childhood curricula.
  • Child Health & Nutrition: Basic knowledge of childhood nutrition, food safety, and allergy management protocols.
  • Documentation & Observation: Ability to take anecdotal notes and use observation tools to track child progress.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Completion of state-mandated introductory training hours in early childhood education (or willingness to complete upon hire).

Preferred Education:

  • Child Development Associate (CDA) Credentialâ„¢.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE), Child Development, or a closely related field.
