Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Deliver intensive, on-site coaching, mentoring, and technical assistance to early childhood educators and program directors to enhance instructional practices and improve classroom quality.
  • Conduct comprehensive program assessments using standardized tools like the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scales (ECERS-3, ITERS-3, FCCERS-3) and the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS®) to identify strengths and guide improvement efforts.
  • Collaborate with program staff to develop, implement, and monitor detailed Quality Improvement Plans (QIPs) based on assessment results, observations, and program-specific goals.
  • Design, develop, and facilitate engaging, evidence-based professional development workshops and training sessions for early childhood professionals on a wide range of topics, including child development, curriculum implementation, positive behavior guidance, and family engagement.
  • Model effective teaching strategies and adult-child interactions directly in the classroom to provide a clear, practical demonstration of best practices.
  • Provide expert guidance on the selection and implementation of developmentally appropriate, evidence-based curricula and child assessment tools.
  • Support programs in creating and maintaining inclusive environments that meet the diverse needs of all children, including those with disabilities or special needs, and dual language learners.
  • Foster strong, respectful, and collaborative relationships with program directors, teaching staff, and other stakeholders to build trust and encourage a culture of continuous quality improvement.
  • Assist programs in strengthening family engagement strategies to build effective partnerships between educators and families.
  • Maintain up-to-date, in-depth knowledge of state licensing regulations, Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS) standards, and Head Start Program Performance Standards.
  • Guide educators in using observation and documentation to inform curriculum planning and individualize instruction for each child.
  • Provide consultation on creating engaging, safe, and well-organized learning environments that promote exploration and development across all domains.
  • Mediate and facilitate difficult conversations, offering strategies for conflict resolution and improved team communication within early learning programs.
  • Develop and disseminate high-quality resources, tip sheets, and materials to support educators and administrators in their daily practice.
  • Collect, analyze, and report on program data (e.g., assessment scores, goal attainment) to track progress, demonstrate impact, and inform future service delivery.
  • Stay current with the latest research, trends, and best practices in the early childhood education field and integrate new knowledge into consultation services.
  • Participate in community outreach efforts and represent the organization at local and regional early childhood meetings and conferences.
  • Manage a caseload of assigned early childhood programs, ensuring timely and consistent delivery of contracted services and maintaining detailed records of all interactions.
  • Support programs in preparing for formal assessments, licensing visits, or accreditation processes.
  • Provide specialized consultation for infant and toddler care, focusing on responsive caregiving, primary care, and continuity of care.
  • Assist programs in developing and refining policies and procedures that reflect best practices in early childhood education.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • CLASS® Assessment: Certified and reliable in Infant, Toddler, and/or Pre-K CLASS® observation tools.
  • Environment Rating Scales (ERS): Demonstrated expertise in using ECERS-3, ITERS-3, and/or FCCERS-3 for program evaluation.
  • Curriculum Expertise: In-depth knowledge of various early childhood curricula (e.g., The Creative Curriculum®, HighScope, Reggio Emilia).
  • Child Development Knowledge: Expert understanding of developmental milestones and learning theories from birth through age five.
  • Adult Learning Principles: Proficiency in designing and delivering effective training and coaching for adult learners.
  • State/Federal Regulations: Strong working knowledge of state child care licensing rules and federal standards (e.g., Head Start).
