Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide one-on-one and small group instructional support to reinforce concepts and skills initially introduced by the lead teacher.
  • Assist in the implementation of students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or 504 plans, ensuring accommodations and modifications are met.
  • Foster a positive, safe, and inclusive classroom atmosphere where all students feel respected and motivated to learn.
  • Actively monitor and supervise student behavior across various school settings, including the classroom, cafeteria, playground, and hallways.

  • Implement positive behavior support strategies and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) to encourage appropriate student conduct and de-escalate challenging situations.
  • Assist students with developing social skills and positive peer interactions through modeling and direct instruction.
  • Collect and maintain accurate data on student academic performance, behavioral progress, and achievement of IEP goals as directed by the teacher.
  • Reinforce learning activities and help students stay on task during independent work, providing clarification and encouragement as needed.
  • Assist the teacher in assessing student work, grading assignments, and providing constructive feedback.
  • Support students with personal care needs, which may include mobility assistance, feeding, or toileting, with dignity and respect.
  • Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the teacher's direction to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
  • Facilitate the use of assistive technology and adaptive equipment to help students access the curriculum and participate fully in class activities.
  • Read to students, listen to students read, and participate in other instructional activities to promote literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Supervise students during emergency drills, assemblies, field trips, and other school-sponsored events to ensure their safety and well-being.

  • Assist the lead teacher with the preparation, organization, and distribution of instructional materials, equipment, and supplies.
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and stimulating learning environment, including setting up learning centers and preparing bulletin boards.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED, combined with one of the following:

  • An Associate's Degree or higher.
  • Completion of at least two years (48 semester units) of study at an institution of higher education.
  • Passing a formal state or local academic assessment (e.g., ParaPro Assessment).

Preferred Education:

Associate's or Bachelor's Degree.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

0-3 years of experience working with children or youth in a structured environment (e.g., school, daycare, coaching, camp).
