Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Install, calibrate, inspect, and troubleshoot a wide range of process instrumentation, including pressure, temperature, level, and flow transmitters.
  • Perform preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance on all plant electrical systems, including motors, motor control centers (MCCs), and variable frequency drives (VFDs).
  • Read, interpret, and red-line technical documents such as P&IDs (Piping and Instrument Diagrams), electrical schematics, loop diagrams, and vendor manuals.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex faults in PLC-based control systems (e.g., Allen-Bradley ControlLogix, Siemens S7), including I/O card issues, communication failures, and network problems.
  • Safely work with low, medium, and high voltage systems (up to 480V and beyond), adhering strictly to NFPA 70E standards and performing LOTO procedures.
  • Utilize advanced diagnostic tools such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, meggers, and HART communicators to effectively identify and rectify system malfunctions.
  • Document all maintenance activities, calibration results, and system modifications meticulously in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), such as SAP or Maximo.
  • Install and terminate conduit, wiring, and connections for new equipment and system upgrades, ensuring all work meets National Electrical Code (NEC) and site standards.
  • Perform loop checks, functional testing, and commissioning support for new installations and capital projects in collaboration with the engineering team.
  • Maintain and repair analytical equipment critical to process quality, such as pH sensors, conductivity meters, and gas detection systems.
  • Participate actively in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations for equipment failures to identify underlying problems and implement effective corrective actions.
  • Troubleshoot and repair sophisticated motor control circuits, including soft starters, VFDs, and reversing starters, to ensure reliable machinery operation.
  • Manage and maintain an inventory of critical E&I spare parts, ensuring availability to minimize production downtime.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to operations personnel to help them understand equipment functions and basic troubleshooting steps.
  • Respond promptly to emergency breakdowns and unplanned outages, including participation in an on-call rotation for after-hours support.
  • Assist in the development and revision of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and maintenance routines for E&I tasks.
  • Perform regular inspections and testing of safety-instrumented systems (SIS) to ensure they function as designed in an emergency.
  • Maintain the integrity of plant communication networks, including Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, and Profibus, by troubleshooting connectivity and hardware issues.
  • Support plant-wide continuous improvement and reliability initiatives by identifying opportunities for process optimization and equipment upgrades.
  • Mentor and train junior technicians or apprentices, sharing knowledge and promoting a culture of safety and excellence.

  • Support operations and engineering teams with ad-hoc troubleshooting and system analysis to resolve pressing production issues.
  • Contribute to the site's reliability and maintenance strategy by providing technical feedback and improvement suggestions from the field.
  • Collaborate with project engineers and external contractors during equipment upgrades and new installations to ensure seamless integration.
  • Participate in daily toolbox talks, pre-shift safety meetings, and weekly maintenance planning sessions to ensure alignment and safe work execution.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • PLC Troubleshooting: Proficient in diagnosing issues on platforms like Allen-Bradley (ControlLogix, PLC-5) and Siemens (S7) using relevant software.
  • Instrumentation & Calibration: Expertise in calibrating and maintaining transmitters, sensors, and control valves using HART communicators and other tools.
  • VFD & Motor Controls: In-depth knowledge of installing, programming, and troubleshooting Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and complex motor control circuits.
    -Electrical Schematics & P&IDs: Ability to read, interpret, and modify complex P&IDs, single-line diagrams, and electrical blueprints.
  • Industrial Power Systems: Experience working with 480V/3-phase power, MCCs, switchgear, and transformers.
  • NFPA 70E & NEC: Strong understanding and practical application of electrical safety standards and codes.
  • CMMS Proficiency: Experience using maintenance management software like SAP Plant Maintenance (PM) or IBM Maximo for work order management.
  • Pneumatic/Hydraulic Systems: Familiarity with troubleshooting and maintaining pneumatic actuators and hydraulic control systems.
  • Process Control Networks: Knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Profibus, or Foundation Fieldbus.
  • Root Cause Analysis (RCA): Skill in using structured problem-solving techniques to determine the root cause of equipment failures.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED combined with a state-certified Journeyman Electrician license, a formal apprenticeship in E&I, or equivalent military training.

Preferred Education:

Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree in a relevant technical field.

  • Experience working within a structured maintenance program and proficiency with a CMMS.
