Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Perform thorough and detailed reviews of project plans, specifications, schematics, and contract documents to fully understand the scope of work.
Execute highly accurate quantity take-offs of electrical materials, equipment, and systems, including lighting, switchgear, devices, fire alarm, and low-voltage systems.
Utilize specialized estimating software (such as Accubid, McCormick, or EstMEP) to build, manage, and finalize comprehensive project estimates.
Develop and maintain detailed cost databases, reflecting current material pricing, labor rates, and installation methods.
Prepare and submit complete bid packages and proposals in a timely manner, ensuring all required documentation and forms are included.
Actively solicit, analyze, and level competitive quotes from material suppliers, equipment vendors, and subcontractors to ensure best value.
Identify and meticulously document any discrepancies, ambiguities, or missing information within the bid documents, issuing RFIs (Requests for Information) to clarify.
Collaborate closely with project managers, engineers, and a project's design team to provide input on design, constructability, and value engineering opportunities.
Prepare detailed scope letters and clarifications to accompany bids, clearly defining what is included and excluded from the proposal.
Attend pre-bid meetings and site walk-throughs to assess project conditions and identify potential challenges or unique requirements.
Develop preliminary project schedules to accurately forecast labor needs and project duration, incorporating this data into the overall cost estimate.
Analyze and manage project risk by identifying potential issues related to logistics, site access, labor availability, and material lead times.
Conduct post-bid analysis to review the accuracy of estimates against actual project costs, refining future bidding strategies.
Formulate detailed budgets and preliminary schedules for design-build projects, working from conceptual drawings and narratives.
Maintain and foster strong professional relationships with general contractors, clients, vendors, and subcontractors.
Prepare and present estimates and proposals to senior management and clients, clearly explaining the cost breakdown and project approach.
Perform cost comparisons between different manufacturers and systems to assist in value engineering efforts for the client.
Coordinate the transition of successful bids to the project management team, conducting a thorough turnover meeting to ensure a seamless handover.
Stay current with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local building codes to ensure all estimates are compliant.
Evaluate and factor in the costs associated with specific project requirements such as BIM modeling, prefabrication, and safety protocols.

Secondary Functions

Assist in mentoring and training junior estimators and other pre-construction staff on software, processes, and best practices.
Contribute to the continuous improvement of estimating procedures, tools, and historical cost databases for increased efficiency and accuracy.
Collaborate with the project management team during active construction to help analyze and price change orders and additional work authorizations.
Participate in industry networking events and trade association meetings to stay informed of market trends and build professional connections.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED combined with significant, relevant field experience and/or completion of an electrical trade school or apprenticeship program.

Preferred Education:

Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.

Relevant Fields of Study:

Construction Management
Electrical Engineering or Engineering Technology
A Journeyman or Master Electrician license is highly valued.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

3-7+ years of dedicated experience as an Electrical Estimator for a commercial or industrial electrical contractor.

Preferred:

Experience estimating a diverse range of projects, including commercial offices, healthcare, data centers, manufacturing, and large-scale residential.
A combination of hands-on electrical field experience and subsequent estimating experience is highly desirable.
Demonstrable track record of successfully bidding on and winning projects valued at over $1 million.
