Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical control systems, wiring, and lighting in accordance with technical specifications and electrical codes.
  • Read and interpret complex blueprints, technical diagrams, and schematics to determine the layout and wiring of new or existing electrical systems.
  • Measure, cut, bend, thread, and professionally install various types of electrical conduit, including EMT, PVC, and Rigid, to effectively route and protect wiring.
  • Skillfully pull and terminate wiring to control panels, distribution boxes, transformers, motors, and other critical electrical components.
  • Mount and install a wide range of electrical equipment, such as lighting fixtures, receptacles, switches, panelboards, and circuit breakers.
  • Perform comprehensive testing and inspection of electrical systems using specialized diagnostic equipment to ensure full functionality and safety.
  • Utilize a variety of testing devices, including multimeters, voltmeters, ammeters, and circuit tracers, to accurately troubleshoot and diagnose electrical issues.
  • Systematically identify, troubleshoot, and rectify electrical faults, system malfunctions, and potential hazards in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ensure all electrical installations, modifications, and repairs strictly adhere to the National Electrical Code (NEC) and all applicable local building regulations.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment by rigorously following all company safety policies, OSHA guidelines, and job-site-specific safety protocols.
  • Collaborate effectively with general contractors, project managers, and other trade professionals to coordinate workflow and proactively resolve on-site challenges.
  • Manage and maintain an accurate inventory of tools, equipment, and materials, reporting any shortages or equipment malfunctions.
  • Perform precise panel terminations and new panel installations, ensuring proper load balancing and clear, accurate circuit identification.
  • Install and service low-voltage systems, which may include fire alarms, security systems, and data/communication cabling infrastructure.
  • Operate power tools, hand tools, and heavy equipment, such as aerial lifts and trenchers, in a safe, proficient, and responsible manner.
  • Complete all required project documentation accurately and on time, including daily work reports, time logs, and as-built drawings.
  • Provide practical guidance, on-the-job training, and mentorship to apprentice electricians or electrical helpers on the team.
  • Actively participate in daily safety briefings ("toolbox talks") and ongoing professional training to stay current with industry best practices and code changes.
  • Plan the optimal layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures based on job specifications, load calculations, and local codes.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks which may include digging trenches for conduit, working in confined spaces, and operating at various heights.

Secondary Functions

  • Respond to emergency and routine service calls to perform on-site troubleshooting and repairs for commercial and residential clients.
  • Assist in the commissioning of new electrical systems, ensuring they meet performance and design specifications before handover.
  • Contribute to project planning and estimating by providing insights on material needs and labor requirements based on technical drawings.
  • Interface professionally with clients or site representatives to provide updates on project progress and answer technical questions.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • National Electrical Code (NEC) Expertise: Deep understanding and practical application of NEC standards for safe and compliant installations.
  • Blueprint & Schematic Interpretation: Ability to read, understand, and execute work based on complex technical drawings and wiring diagrams.
  • Conduit Bending & Installation: Proficiency in bending, cutting, and installing EMT, Rigid, and PVC conduit.
  • Wire Pulling & Termination: Expertise in pulling conductors through conduit and making clean, secure terminations.
  • Circuit Troubleshooting & Diagnostics: Advanced skills in identifying and resolving electrical faults in live and de-energized circuits.
  • Panelboard Installation: Experience with installing, wiring, and terminating main distribution panels and subpanels.
  • Low-Voltage Systems: Knowledge of installing and servicing fire alarm, security, and data/communication systems.
  • Electrical Testing Equipment: Proficient use of multimeters, clamp meters, circuit tracers, and insulation resistance testers.
  • Electrical Theory: Solid foundation in electrical principles, including Ohm's law, AC/DC theory, and load calculations.
  • Power Tool Proficiency: Safe and efficient operation of drills, saws, grinders, and other common construction tools.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Completion of a recognized Electrical Apprenticeship program.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or Associate's Degree from a vocational or technical college in a related field.
  • Journeyman Electrician License/Certification.

Relevant Fields of Study:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-5+ years of hands-on experience as an electrical apprentice or installer in a commercial, industrial, or residential setting.

Preferred: Documented experience as a Journeyman Electrician on diverse construction or service projects. Experience leading small crews is a plus.
