Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair complex electronic printed circuit boards (PCBs) and assemblies down to the component level.
  • Utilize a wide range of electronic test equipment, including oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal generators, and spectrum analyzers, to identify faults and verify repairs.
  • Read, interpret, and work from detailed electronic schematics, blueprints, technical manuals, and wiring diagrams to guide troubleshooting and repair activities.
  • Perform high-precision soldering and de-soldering of through-hole, surface-mount (SMT), and Ball Grid Array (BGA) components using industry-standard techniques.
  • Calibrate, align, and test electronic equipment and instruments to ensure they meet manufacturer specifications and quality standards.
  • Assemble and disassemble complex electronic products and sub-assemblies to access components for testing, repair, or replacement.
  • Conduct root cause analysis on recurring equipment failures to identify systemic issues and collaborate with engineering on corrective actions and design improvements.
  • Perform functional and final testing on repaired units to validate that all operational issues have been resolved before returning them to service.
  • Maintain meticulous and accurate records of all repair work, including diagnostics performed, components replaced, and time spent, using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) or other tracking software.
  • Manage an inventory of spare parts, components, and repair supplies, initiating requisitions to replenish stock and prevent work delays.
  • Execute preventative maintenance procedures on electronic systems and test equipment to enhance reliability and minimize unplanned downtime.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, especially Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) prevention procedures, to protect sensitive electronic components.
  • Install, configure, and update software and firmware on electronic devices as a part of the comprehensive repair and refurbishment process.
  • Evaluate the cost-effectiveness of repairs, providing recommendations on whether to repair, refurbish, or replace a given unit.
  • Set up and operate specialized test benches, fixtures, and automated test equipment (ATE) for comprehensive system diagnostics.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide clear technical feedback and data on failure trends to Quality Assurance and Engineering departments to support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Assist in the development and documentation of new repair procedures, work instructions, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Train and mentor junior technicians on best practices for diagnostics, repair techniques, and safety standards.
  • Interface with technical support or customer service teams to clarify reported issues and provide updates on repair status.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and ESD-safe workstation to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Component-Level Troubleshooting: Proven ability to diagnose and resolve faults in complex analog and digital circuits.
  • Soldering Proficiency: Expertise in soldering and rework techniques for SMT, through-hole, and fine-pitch components (IPC certification like J-STD-001 is a plus).
  • Schematic Interpretation: Ability to fluently read and interpret electronic schematics, datasheets, and technical drawings.
  • Test Equipment Operation: Skilled in the use of standard and advanced electronic test equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, DMMs, logic analyzers, power supplies).
  • Electronic Theory: Strong foundational knowledge of analog and digital electronics, including microprocessors and power systems.
