Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, plan, and implement a comprehensive and sequential art curriculum for elementary grade levels (K-5) that is aligned with state and national visual arts standards.
  • Instruct students in the fundamental principles of art and elements of design using a diverse range of media, including drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, and digital art.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and stimulating classroom environment that encourages creative expression, artistic risk-taking, and mutual respect among all students.
  • Establish and maintain effective classroom management procedures that create a positive and productive learning atmosphere conducive to artistic exploration.
  • Assess and monitor student understanding and artistic growth using a variety of formative and summative evaluation tools, including portfolios, rubrics, and critiques.
  • Adapt and differentiate instruction, materials, and assessments to meet the diverse learning styles, abilities, and needs of all students, including those with special needs and English learners.
  • Design and execute engaging, inquiry-based lesson plans that connect art to history, diverse cultures, and other core academic subjects like science, math, and literature.
  • Introduce students to a wide array of artists, art forms, and cultural traditions from around the world to broaden their perspectives and appreciation for global arts.
  • Provide specific, constructive, and encouraging feedback to students to guide their technical skill development and help them cultivate a unique artistic voice.
  • Prepare, organize, and manage the display of student artwork for school-wide art shows, community exhibitions, and digital platforms to celebrate student achievement.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and resource-rich art room, which includes managing inventory of supplies and materials, placing orders, and ensuring the safe use and storage of all tools and equipment.
  • Effectively demonstrate a wide variety of artistic techniques and processes, breaking down complex steps for young learners in an accessible and engaging manner.
  • Integrate technology thoughtfully into the art curriculum to enhance learning, such as using digital drawing tablets, educational apps, online museum resources, and creating digital portfolios.

Secondary Functions

  • Collaborate consistently with classroom teachers, specialists, and support staff to plan interdisciplinary projects and support school-wide academic and social-emotional learning goals.
  • Maintain open, frequent, and professional communication with parents and guardians regarding student progress, classroom activities, and individual needs through newsletters, emails, and conferences.
  • Actively participate in faculty meetings, professional development opportunities, grade-level team meetings, and parent-teacher conferences to contribute to the school's professional learning community.
  • Curate, organize, and install student art exhibitions throughout the school building and for community events, managing all logistics from artwork selection to installation and de-installation.
  • Uphold and enforce all school policies, administrative regulations, and board policies, and actively supervise students in various settings outside the classroom as assigned.
  • Investigate and pursue opportunities for external funding, such as writing grant proposals to support special art projects, technology upgrades, or visiting artist programs.
  • Serve as an active member on school or district-level committees, such as the School Improvement Team, Curriculum Committee, or Sunshine Committee, to represent the arts program.
  • Maintain a professional portfolio and engage in ongoing personal artistic practice and professional learning to stay current with contemporary art and best practices in art education.
  • Advocate for the importance of a high-quality arts education program within the school community and to the public.
  • Sponsor and oversee after-school art clubs or enrichment activities to provide students with additional opportunities for creative exploration.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Relevant Fields of Study:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of teaching experience.

Preferred: Prior experience teaching art at the elementary school level, including successful completion of student teaching, is highly preferred. Demonstrated experience working with students from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds and a proven track record of fostering a positive and inclusive classroom culture.
