🎯 Role Definition

This role requires a dedicated and highly skilled Elevator Constructor (also known as Elevator Mechanic or Technician) to join our team. In this pivotal role, you will be the expert हाथ-on ensuring the safe and seamless operation of vertical transportation systems. You are responsible for the entire lifecycle of elevators, escalators, and similar equipment—from initial assembly and installation in new construction projects to performing routine preventative maintenance, troubleshooting complex malfunctions, and executing modernization upgrades. This position is critical to public safety and the functionality of modern commercial and residential buildings, requiring a deep understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems, coupled with-a-rigorous adherence to safety codes and regulations.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute the complete field installation of new elevator and escalator systems, including the assembly of cars, hoisting machinery, guide rails, counterweights, and door mechanisms according to precise engineering blueprints.
  • Read and meticulously interpret complex architectural, mechanical, and electrical blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams to ensure accurate installation and repair.
  • Perform systematic, preventative maintenance on electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems to minimize downtime and ensure long-term equipment reliability.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot intricate malfunctions in elevator control systems, motors, brakes, and door operators using advanced diagnostic tools and software.
  • Respond promptly to emergency service calls, safely extricate trapped passengers, and perform critical on-site repairs to restore equipment to service.
  • Conduct rigorous safety and load-bearing tests on new and existing installations to ensure full compliance with ASME A17.1, OSHA, and local building codes.
  • Replace or expertly repair worn, damaged, or defective parts, including steel cables, ropes, motors, control boards, bearings, and safety devices.
  • Execute complex modernization projects, carefully dismantling old equipment and installing new, state-of-the-art systems with minimal disruption to building operations.
  • Perform precise adjustments on elevator components, such as car leveling, door speeds, and sensor calibration, to ensure optimal performance and ride quality.
  • Install, wire, and test all electrical components, including control panels, PLCs, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and communication systems.
  • Interface professionally with clients, building managers, general contractors, and other trades to coordinate work schedules and communicate project status.
  • Maintain meticulous, detailed records of all service, maintenance, testing, and repair activities, utilizing digital-or-paper-based-logging systems.
  • Adhere to and enforce all company and industry safety protocols, including Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO), fall protection, and confined space entry procedures.
  • Manage and maintain an accurate inventory of tools, parts, and equipment on a service vehicle or at a job site.
  • Utilize specialized hoisting and rigging techniques to safely maneuver heavy elevator components into position within the hoistway.
  • Perform welding, brazing, and soldering as required for the fabrication and repair of brackets, frames, and other metal components.
  • Test all safety features, including emergency brakes, overspeed governors, and fire service recall, to verify they are functioning correctly.
  • Investigate and resolve customer complaints related to elevator performance, such as noise, vibration, or ride comfort issues.
  • Keep the machine room and work areas clean, organized, and free of potential hazards to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Mentor and provide on-the-job training to apprentice elevator mechanics, guiding them on technical procedures, troubleshooting techniques, and safety standards.
  • Calibrate and fine-tune newly installed or repaired systems to meet or exceed all performance specifications and client expectations.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Blueprint & Schematic Interpretation: Deep proficiency in reading and understanding complex electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic diagrams.
  • Electrical Systems Expertise: Strong knowledge of AC/DC theory, motor control circuits, PLCs, and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Expertise in mechanical assembly, alignment, rigging, and the use of power and hand tools.
  • Troubleshooting & Diagnostics: Advanced ability to systematically diagnose and resolve complex electro-mechanical and hydraulic failures.
  • Code Compliance: Thorough understanding of national and local elevator safety codes, particularly ASME A17.1.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Successful completion of a registered, multi-year Elevator Constructor Apprenticeship Program.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree or certificate from a vocational/technical college.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 4-5+ years of post-apprenticeship experience as a Journeyman Elevator Constructor.

Preferred:

  • Certified Elevator Technician (CET) or a state-issued Elevator Mechanic license.
  • Experience working on a wide variety of equipment manufacturers (e.g., Otis, KONE, Schindler, Thyssenkrupp).
