Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive vehicle emissions inspections on a variety of passenger cars and light-duty trucks in strict accordance with state, federal, and EPA regulations.
  • Operate and interface with computerized On-Board Diagnostics (OBD-II) systems and dynamometers to accurately collect and analyze vehicle emissions data.
  • Meticulously perform visual inspections of emission control components, including catalytic converters, gas caps, and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valves, to identify tampering or defects.
  • Clearly and professionally communicate inspection procedures, test results, and potential reasons for failure to vehicle owners in an understandable manner.
  • Issue official inspection certificates, stickers, or waiver documentation based on vehicle test outcomes, ensuring all paperwork is accurate and complete.
  • Process customer transactions, including collecting inspection fees, handling cash and credit card payments, and providing accurate receipts.
  • Maintain a thorough and up-to-date understanding of all applicable emissions laws, testing procedures, and program updates through continuous training and self-study.
  • Calibrate, maintain, and perform routine troubleshooting of all emissions testing equipment to ensure constant operational accuracy and compliance with state standards.
  • Accurately input vehicle identification numbers (VIN), test data, and customer information into the state's vehicle inspection database.
  • Provide customers with information regarding state-approved repair options and re-testing procedures if their vehicle fails the inspection.
  • Uphold the highest standards of integrity and ethics, ensuring every inspection is performed impartially and without bias.
  • Safely operate customer vehicles of various makes and models, including manual and automatic transmissions, within the testing bay and on facility property.
  • Manage the flow of vehicles in and out of the inspection bay efficiently to minimize customer wait times and maximize throughput.
  • Perform functional checks of the gas cap and fuel system to ensure proper sealing and prevent evaporative emissions.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment in the inspection bay and customer waiting area, adhering to all safety protocols.
  • Assist in managing inventory of essential inspection supplies, such as stickers, forms, and printer consumables, and report when stock is low.
  • Provide support to other technicians or service advisors during peak hours or when assistance is needed with vehicle handling.
  • Conduct basic verification of vehicle information, such as confirming the VIN on the vehicle matches the registration paperwork.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and training sessions to enhance skills and stay informed about company policies and industry best practices.
  • Document and report any equipment malfunctions or software issues to management promptly for resolution.
  • Assist in opening and closing procedures for the inspection facility, ensuring equipment is properly shut down and the station is secure.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • State Emissions Inspector License: Must possess a current, valid state-issued license or certification to perform vehicle emissions inspections.
  • On-Board Diagnostics (OBD-II): Proficient in using OBD-II scanners and interpreting diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
  • Emissions Analyzer Operation: Skilled in operating and calibrating various types of emissions testing equipment (e.g., dynamometers, gas analyzers).

  • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications, particularly A6, A8, and L1.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of hands-on experience in an automotive service or inspection environment.
