Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Provide comprehensive pre-procedure patient assessment and education, verifying medical history, allergies, and ensuring informed consent is properly obtained and documented.
Administer and meticulously monitor patients under moderate (conscious) sedation per institutional policy, continuously assessing vital signs, respiratory status, and level of comfort.
Actively assist the gastroenterologist during a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, such as EGD, colonoscopy, ERCP, EUS, and small bowel enteroscopy.
Skillfully manage and operate complex endoscopic equipment, including video processors, light sources, and irrigation pumps, as well as specialized procedural accessories.
Deliver focused patient care in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), managing post-procedure recovery, addressing pain and nausea, and assessing for potential complications.
Implement and strictly adhere to infection control protocols, including the critical process of high-level disinfection and sterilization of endoscopes and related instruments.
Maintain precise and contemporaneous documentation of all patient care activities, procedural findings, and medication administration within the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
Serve as a dedicated patient advocate, ensuring patient privacy, dignity, and rights are protected and respected throughout their entire procedural experience.
Respond swiftly and effectively to any adverse events or emergencies, such as perforation, bleeding, or cardiopulmonary compromise, by initiating ACLS/BLS protocols and mobilizing the team.
Expertly collect, label, and manage the disposition of biopsies and other specimens obtained during procedures, ensuring chain of custody and accurate submission to pathology.
Provide clear, compassionate, and thorough discharge instructions to patients and their families, covering diet, medications, activity restrictions, and signs of complications to watch for.
Prepare the endoscopy suite for procedures by ensuring all necessary equipment, instrumentation, and supplies are available and in proper working order.
Evaluate patient readiness for discharge based on established criteria, ensuring they are stable and have a safe transportation and home care plan.
Collaborate seamlessly with the multidisciplinary team, including physicians, anesthesiologists, schedulers, and technicians, to optimize patient flow and ensure coordinated care.
Assess the patient's physiological and psychological state pre- and post-procedure, identifying and intervening on any deviations from their baseline condition.

Secondary Functions

Participate in unit-based quality improvement and patient safety initiatives, contributing to data collection, analysis, and process enhancement.
Act as a clinical resource and mentor for new nursing staff, medical residents, and endoscopy technicians to foster professional growth and team competency.

Required Skills & Competencies
