Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Provide direct supervision, mentorship, and performance management for all nursing and technical staff within the Endoscopy unit, including conducting regular performance evaluations and fostering professional development.
- Oversee and coordinate the daily clinical operations of the unit, including patient scheduling, room allocation, and staffing assignments, to ensure optimal patient flow and efficiency.
- Champion and enforce all regulatory, accreditation, and professional standards, including those from The Joint Commission (TJC), DOH, AORN, and SGNA.
- Act as the primary clinical resource and subject matter expert for the nursing staff, providing guidance on complex patient cases, new procedures, and advanced clinical decision-making.
- Manage the procurement, inventory, and maintenance of all departmental supplies and capital equipment, including endoscopes, processors, and patient monitoring devices.
- Develop, review, and implement clinical policies, procedures, and protocols in alignment with evidence-based practices to standardize and improve patient care.
- Lead and participate in quality improvement (QI) and patient safety initiatives, collecting and analyzing data to identify trends and implement corrective action plans.
- Proactively address and resolve patient, family, and staff concerns or conflicts in a timely and professional manner, promoting a positive and respectful environment.
- Ensure rigorous adherence to all infection control standards, particularly those related to high-level disinfection (HLD) and reprocessing of endoscopic equipment.
- Collaborate effectively with gastroenterologists, anesthesiologists, surgeons, and other medical staff to ensure a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
- Manage departmental staffing, including creating schedules, approving time off, and adjusting staffing levels based on census and acuity to ensure safe and effective patient care.
- Facilitate the comprehensive orientation, onboarding, and ongoing competency validation for all new and existing unit employees.
- Assist in the development and management of the unit's operational and capital budgets, monitoring expenses and identifying opportunities for cost containment.
- Lead daily team huddles and regular staff meetings to disseminate important information, celebrate successes, and address operational challenges.
- Investigate and report on patient safety events, near misses, and adverse outcomes, contributing to root cause analysis and prevention strategies.
- Maintain a consistent leadership presence on the unit, providing hands-on assistance with direct patient care as needed during periods of high volume or staffing shortages.
- Drive efforts to enhance the patient experience and improve patient satisfaction scores (e.g., HCAHPS) through focused initiatives and staff coaching.
- Coordinate with ancillary and support departments such as Sterile Processing (SPD), Environmental Services, PACU, and Pathology to ensure seamless procedural support.
- Ensure all clinical documentation is accurate, complete, and compliant with hospital policies and regulatory requirements.
- Evaluate and recommend new technologies, equipment, and procedural techniques that could enhance the quality, safety, and efficiency of care within the GI unit.
- Participate in hospital-wide leadership committees and projects, representing the unique needs and contributions of the Endoscopy service line.
Secondary Functions
- Support quality and performance improvement initiatives by gathering and analyzing unit-specific data, such as procedure turnaround times, patient outcomes, and staff productivity.
- Contribute to the strategic planning for the Gastroenterology service line by providing operational insights and frontline perspective.
- Collaborate with administrative and financial departments to ensure resource allocation and budget adherence align with clinical needs and organizational goals.
- Participate in interdisciplinary committee meetings and leadership forums to represent the Endoscopy unit and contribute to hospital-wide initiatives.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Advanced Endoscopy Knowledge: Deep understanding of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, including ERCP, EUS, colonoscopy, and EGD.
- High-Level Disinfection (HLD): Expert knowledge of endoscope reprocessing, sterilization techniques, and infection control standards (AORN/SGNA).
- Patient Sedation & Monitoring: Competency in managing patients under moderate (conscious) sedation, including airway management and hemodynamic monitoring.
- EHR Proficiency: Experience with electronic health record (EHR) systems such as Epic, Cerner, or Provation for charting and order entry.
- Regulatory Compliance: Strong, working knowledge of TJC, CMS, and state health department regulations applicable to procedural areas.
- Certifications: Current BLS and ACLS certifications are required.

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range:
