Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform complete disassembly, meticulous cleaning, and in-depth inspection of gasoline and diesel engines and their components to diagnose failures and determine the scope of necessary machining.
- Operate a variety of precision machine shop equipment, including boring bars, honing machines, lathes, surface grinders, and crankshaft grinders, to recondition engine parts to OEM or performance specifications.
- Execute precise measurements on engine components using advanced metrology tools such as micrometers, bore gauges, profilometers, and dial indicators to ensure adherence to sub-thousandth-of-an-inch tolerances.
- Conduct multi-angle valve jobs, including cutting valve seats, grinding valves, and setting valve stem heights on cylinder heads for optimal airflow, compression, and sealing.
- Perform dynamic balancing of crankshafts, connecting rods, pistons, and other rotating assembly components to ensure smooth, vibration-free engine operation and longevity, especially in high-RPM applications.
- Expertly recondition cylinder heads by pressure testing for cracks, resurfacing, replacing valve guides and seats, and performing performance porting and polishing to enhance airflow.
- Machine engine blocks by performing critical tasks such as boring and honing cylinders to precise sizes, align boring and honing main bearing housings, and decking block surfaces for perfect gasket seal.
- Meticulously assemble engine short blocks and long blocks, carefully checking and documenting all bearing clearances, piston-to-wall clearances, ring gaps, and torque specifications according to the build sheet.
- Read, interpret, and work from complex technical blueprints, engine build sheets, and OEM service manuals to complete all machining and assembly tasks with absolute accuracy.
- Diagnose complex engine failures and mechanical issues by analyzing worn or damaged components, providing expert recommendations for repair, replacement, or performance upgrades.
- Set up and operate CNC machining centers (e.g., Rottler, Sunnen, Centroid) for automated and repeatable machining processes on engine blocks and heads.
- Perform crankshaft magnafluxing to detect cracks, as well as grinding and polishing journals to restore proper size, straightness, and surface finish.
- Recondition connecting rods by resizing big ends, honing pin bushings, and ensuring they are straight and balanced to within a fraction of a gram.
- Calculate component compression ratios, balancing factors, and other critical engine parameters to meet specific build requirements for racing, street performance, or heavy-duty industrial applications.
- Fabricate or modify components as needed using welding (TIG/MIG), milling, and lathe operations to solve unique engineering challenges or for custom applications.
Secondary Functions
- Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis related to engine failure trends and component wear.
- Contribute to the organization's continuous improvement by suggesting new tools, techniques, and process enhancements.
