Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and visualize unique, story-driven concepts for themed environments, attractions, parades, and live shows from blue-sky ideation through detailed design.
  • Create compelling and emotive presentation materials, including concept art, mood boards, storyboards, and rendered illustrations to communicate creative intent.
  • Generate comprehensive 2D and 3D design documentation, including master plans, area development layouts, detailed floor plans, sections, and elevations.
  • Build detailed 3D digital models of show sets, facilities, and environments using software like SketchUp, Rhino, or Revit to study massing, scale, and guest sightlines.
  • Collaborate intensively with a multidisciplinary team of writers, producers, architects, engineers, and creative directors to ensure a cohesive and integrated final product.
  • Design and specify thematic details, including show-action equipment, props, rockwork, foliage, and architectural finish palettes that enhance the narrative.
  • Ensure all designs align with the project's core story, brand identity, budget constraints, and operational requirements.
  • Participate in and often lead creative brainstorming sessions, design charettes, and workshops to generate and refine ideas.
  • Develop and deliver clear, persuasive design presentations to internal executives, stakeholders, and external partners.
  • Research and integrate new technologies, fabrication techniques, and materials to push the boundaries of immersive entertainment.
  • Translate high-level creative concepts into practical, buildable designs while maintaining the original artistic vision.
  • Work closely with fabrication vendors and on-site construction teams, providing art direction and reviewing progress to ensure design integrity is flawlessly executed.
  • Create detailed guest-flow diagrams and capacity studies to optimize the operational efficiency and overall guest experience.
  • Review and approve vendor shop drawings, material samples, and mock-ups for creative, technical, and quality assurance.
  • Provide on-site field art direction during installation, including the placement of props, scenic elements, and final thematic paint application.
  • Manage and track the development of design assets, ensuring they meet project milestones and deadlines.
  • Generate and maintain a consistent visual style guide and design language for all project elements.
  • Mentor junior designers and interns, providing constructive feedback and fostering a collaborative and innovative team culture.
  • Interpret and design in accordance with building codes, safety regulations (like ADA), and other jurisdictional requirements.
  • Develop detailed design documentation packages for all phases of a project, including Concept, Schematic Design (SD), Design Development (DD), and Construction Documentation (CD).
  • Create material and finish boards that physically represent the thematic palette for review and approval by creative leadership.

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis related to guest experience and flow.
  • Contribute to the organization's creative strategy, design standards, and long-term roadmap.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced 2D Design & Illustration: Mastery of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) for creating high-quality concept art, mood boards, and presentation documents.
  • 3D Modeling & Massing: High proficiency in 3D design software such as SketchUp, Rhino, and/or Revit for rapid ideation, environmental modeling, and detailed design.
  • Architectural & Thematic Drafting: Strong skills in AutoCAD or Revit for producing precise technical drawings, including plans, elevations, and sections.
  • Rendering & Visualization: Ability to create compelling, photorealistic renderings using V-Ray, Enscape, Lumion, or similar software to communicate design intent.
  • Storyboarding & Sequential Art: Skill in creating clear, dynamic storyboards to visualize narrative beats, attraction sequences, and guest experiences.
  • Hand Sketching: Foundational ability to quickly communicate ideas through freehand drawing and sketching.
  • Digital Painting: Advanced skills in digital painting techniques within Photoshop or Procreate for concept illustration and matte painting.
  • Presentation Design: Expertise in crafting and delivering visually stunning and persuasive presentations using tools like InDesign, PowerPoint, or Keynote.
  • Bluebeam Revu: Proficiency in using Bluebeam for collaborative review, markup, and management of design documents.
  • Understanding of Construction Documents: The ability to read, interpret, and contribute to full sets of architectural and engineering drawings.
  • Knowledge of Materials & Finishes: Familiarity with thematic materials, fabrication methods, and construction techniques specific to the entertainment industry.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant design field. A strong, professional-quality portfolio can sometimes substitute for a formal degree.

Preferred Education:

  • Master of Architecture (M.Arch), Master of Fine Arts (MFA), or a specialized master's degree in Themed Entertainment Design.

  • A portfolio demonstrating strong visual storytelling and a wide range of design skills, from blue-sky concept art to detailed design drawings.
  • Experience with the full project lifecycle, from concept ideation through on-site installation and art direction.
  • Proven ability to work effectively within large, multidisciplinary teams on complex, multi-million dollar projects.
