Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design, plan, and execute complex laboratory, greenhouse, and field-based experiments to investigate insect biology, ecology, behavior, and genetics.
  • Develop and implement novel research methodologies for studying insect-plant interactions, vector-pathogen dynamics, or the efficacy of pest control tactics.
  • Perform advanced molecular biology techniques, including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, gel electrophoresis, and next-generation sequencing (NGS) data preparation and analysis.
  • Manage and maintain laboratory and field insect colonies, ensuring their health, genetic integrity, and availability for continuous experimental use.
  • Conduct comprehensive insect surveys, including specimen collection, preservation, and precise taxonomic identification using morphological keys and molecular tools.
  • Execute and evaluate a wide range of bioassays to determine the efficacy, sublethal effects, and resistance mechanisms of insecticides, biopesticides, and other control agents.
  • Collect, manage, and meticulously document large datasets from experimental trials, ensuring data integrity, traceability, and reproducibility.
  • Perform sophisticated statistical analysis of experimental data using software such as R, SAS, or JMP to interpret results and draw valid scientific conclusions.
  • Author and prepare high-impact manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals, contributing significantly to the body of entomological knowledge.
  • Develop and deliver compelling oral and poster presentations to communicate research findings at regional, national, and international scientific conferences.
  • Actively contribute to the preparation and submission of grant proposals to secure external funding from government agencies (e.g., USDA, NIH, NSF), foundations, and industry partners.
  • Stay abreast of current literature, emerging technologies, and theoretical advancements in the field of entomology and related disciplines through continuous learning.
  • Provide direct mentorship, training, and supervision to junior researchers, graduate and undergraduate students, and technical staff on experimental protocols and safety procedures.
  • Develop, test, and refine protocols for Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs, incorporating biological, cultural, chemical, and genetic control methods.

Secondary Functions

  • Ensure all research activities are conducted in strict compliance with university, state, and federal safety, animal welfare, and environmental regulations.
  • Participate actively in departmental seminars, journal clubs, and strategic planning meetings to foster a collaborative and intellectually stimulating research environment.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in a range of molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, DNA/RNA isolation, cloning, library prep for NGS).
  • Expertise in insect rearing, handling, and the establishment and maintenance of insect colonies.
  • Strong skills in experimental design and advanced statistical analysis using R, SAS, Python, or similar software.
  • Demonstrated experience with insect taxonomy and identification using both morphological keys and molecular barcoding methods.
  • Proven ability in conducting various laboratory bioassays (e.g., diet-based, topical, residual) and field efficacy trials.
  • Competency with scientific writing demonstrated by a record of peer-reviewed publications and contributions to grant proposals.
  • Experience with advanced microscopy (light, electron, or confocal) and associated digital imaging software.
