🎯 Role Definition
An Environment Artist is a crucial creative force responsible for building the digital worlds and settings within a video game, film, or virtual reality experience. They translate concept art and design ideas into fully-realized 3D spaces, including landscapes, architecture, and props. This involves a blend of artistic talent and technical skill, focusing on everything from the grand scale of a city skyline to the minute details of a single paving stone. Their work directly impacts the player's experience, setting the mood, telling a story through visual cues, and creating a believable, immersive world to explore.

- Implement and refine environment lighting to establish the mood, time of day, and visual clarity of a scene, collaborating with Lighting Artists.
- Optimize environment assets and scenes for performance, managing polygon counts, texture memory, and draw calls to meet technical budgets for target platforms.
- Create modular asset kits that can be used efficiently by level designers and other artists to build out large-scale worlds.
- Develop and maintain the art pipeline for environment creation, from initial asset modeling to final in-game implementation.
- Sculpt natural and man-made landscapes using terrain tools like World Machine, Gaea, or in-engine sculpting systems.
- Work closely with Level Designers to ensure that the environment art supports and enhances gameplay, navigation, and mission objectives.
- Generate and implement various levels of detail (LODs) for environment assets to ensure smooth performance across different distances.
- Collaborate with Technical Artists to develop new shaders, tools, and workflows to improve the quality and efficiency of environment creation.
- Participate in art reviews, providing and receiving constructive feedback to maintain high-quality standards and artistic consistency across the project.
