Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conceptualize, model, and build large-scale, immersive 3D environments from initial block-out and prototyping phases through to the final, polished product.
- Collaborate extensively with Level Designers to ensure that environmental layouts support core gameplay mechanics, facilitate intuitive player navigation, and enhance the overall gameplay experience.
- Translate 2D concept art, mood boards, and art direction into fully realized 3D worlds, ensuring the final assets capture the intended atmosphere, narrative tone, and stylistic language.
- Author and implement high-quality materials and textures using a PBR (Physically Based Rendering) workflow, leveraging software like Substance Suite to create realistic or stylized surfaces.
- Sculpt and model a diverse range of high-detail, game-ready assets, including architectural structures, natural landscapes, foliage, and intricate props, using tools like Maya, 3ds Max, and ZBrush.
- Implement dynamic and baked lighting solutions to establish a compelling mood, guide the player's eye, and highlight key areas, working with post-processing volumes and atmospheric effects to achieve a cinematic quality.
- Meticulously craft environmental storytelling moments through strategic set dressing, asset placement, and architectural design that enrich the game’s lore and provide context to the player.
- Rigorously optimize all aspects of the environment—including geometry, textures, materials, and lighting—to meet strict performance budgets for frame rate and memory on target platforms.
- Proactively identify, troubleshoot, and solve performance bottlenecks related to draw calls, shader complexity, and overdraw to guarantee a smooth and stable player experience.
- Develop and maintain a library of efficient, reusable modular asset kits and trim sheets to accelerate production and ensure visual consistency across the game world.
- Work within the chosen game engine (e.g., Unreal Engine, Unity) to assemble scenes, author materials, integrate assets, and fine-tune the final look and feel of the environment.
- Manage and correctly implement Level of Detail (LOD) systems, culling volumes, and other engine-specific optimization techniques as an integral part of the creation process.
- Actively participate in art reviews, providing and gracefully receiving constructive feedback to maintain high standards of quality and alignment with the Art Director's vision.
- Partner with Technical Artists and Engineers to help define, refine, and adhere to the environmental art pipeline, tools, and technical constraints.
- Research and stay current with emerging technologies, tools, and techniques—such as photogrammetry and procedural generation—to continuously improve workflow efficiency and visual fidelity.
- Create and maintain clear, comprehensive documentation for environmental art assets, workflows, and best practices to support team-wide knowledge sharing.
- Ensure all created assets and scenes adhere to established technical specifications, file structures, and naming conventions for a clean and manageable project.
- Mentor junior artists by sharing expert knowledge, providing guidance on techniques, and fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented team culture.
- Collaborate with the VFX team to ensure seamless integration of environmental effects, such as weather, fire, and atmospheric particles.
- Work closely with the QA department to systematically identify, triage, and resolve bugs related to environmental art, including collision issues, visual artifacts, and performance drops.
Secondary Functions
- Support the marketing and communications teams by creating high-quality, aesthetically pleasing in-game screenshots and renders for promotional materials.
- Contribute to pre-production and R&D phases by creating "vertical slice" environments that establish the final art style and prove out technical capabilities.
- Assist the cinematics team by preparing and polishing specific environments and set pieces required for in-game cutscenes and narrative sequences.
- Participate actively in regular playtesting sessions to gain firsthand insight into how players interact with and perceive the environments you have built.
