Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) compliance audits at manufacturing plants, operational facilities, and project sites to verify adherence to federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Develop, plan, and execute a multi-faceted audit program, including defining audit scope, creating detailed checklists, and establishing clear objectives.
  • Prepare and present formal, high-quality audit reports detailing findings, compliance gaps, potential risks, and actionable recommendations to facility and senior management.
  • Lead opening and closing meetings for audits, effectively communicating the audit process and a summary of critical findings to all relevant stakeholders.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness and maturity of Environmental Management Systems (EMS), particularly those based on the ISO 14001 standard.
  • Develop, track, and verify the implementation of Corrective and Preventive Action Plans (CAPAs) to ensure timely and effective resolution of audit findings.
  • Perform thorough Phase I and support Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) for property transactions, mergers, and acquisitions to identify potential environmental liabilities.
  • Investigate environmental incidents, accidents, and near-misses, utilizing root cause analysis methodologies to prevent recurrence.
  • Interpret complex environmental regulations (e.g., Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA, EPCRA) and assess their impact on company operations.
  • Review and verify the accuracy of data submitted for regulatory reports, permits, and internal sustainability/ESG disclosures.
  • Assess facility processes related to waste management, water and wastewater treatment, air emissions, chemical storage, and emergency response.
  • Provide expert-level EHS technical support and guidance to site personnel, promoting a culture of continuous improvement and compliance.
  • Act as a primary liaison during regulatory agency inspections (e.g., EPA, OSHA, state environmental agencies), facilitating communication and information exchange.
  • Develop and deliver targeted training programs to employees on environmental policies, compliance requirements, and best practices.

Secondary Functions

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Regulatory Expertise: Deep knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations, including EPA, OSHA, RCRA, CWA, CAA, SARA, and DOT.
  • Auditing Standards: Proficiency in formal auditing methodologies and familiarity with management systems like ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
  • Report Writing: Ability to author clear, concise, and technically accurate audit reports that are understandable to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Skilled in using investigative techniques (e.g., 5 Whys, Fishbone Diagrams) to determine the fundamental causes of non-compliance and incidents.
  • Environmental Site Assessments: Experience conducting or managing Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs).
  • Data Analysis: Competency in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting environmental data (e.g., emissions, waste manifests, water quality samples).
  • Permit Management: Understanding of the environmental permitting process and compliance tracking for air, water, and waste permits.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Professional certifications such as Certified Professional Environmental Auditor (CPEA), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or Registered Environmental Manager (REM).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • Proven track record of leading independent compliance audits.
  • Direct experience interacting with regulatory agencies.
