Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct in-depth research and analysis of local, state, federal, and international environmental laws, regulations, and proposed legislation (e.g., Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, NEPA, Paris Agreement).
  • Monitor, track, and interpret legislative and regulatory developments related to climate change, energy, water quality, waste management, and conservation.
  • Author comprehensive reports, white papers, policy briefs, and fact sheets to communicate research findings to internal teams, clients, and external stakeholders.
  • Develop quantitative and qualitative models to assess the environmental, economic, and social impacts of proposed policies and projects.
  • Prepare and deliver compelling presentations, testimonies, and briefings for government agencies, legislative committees, industry groups, and the public.
  • Formulate and advocate for specific policy positions and recommendations that align with the organization's strategic goals and mission.
  • Engage with a diverse network of stakeholders, including government officials, NGOs, academic institutions, and industry representatives, to build coalitions and advance policy objectives.
  • Analyze scientific studies and technical data to evaluate environmental risks and inform evidence-based policymaking.
  • Provide expert guidance and strategic advice to senior leadership on emerging environmental trends and potential policy-related risks and opportunities.
  • Draft formal comments and responses to proposed rules and regulations on behalf of the organization during public comment periods.
  • Manage complex, long-term research projects from conception to completion, ensuring deadlines and deliverables are met.
  • Utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other spatial analysis tools to visualize data and analyze the geographic implications of environmental policies.
  • Conduct environmental justice analyses to ensure that policy outcomes do not disproportionately burden marginalized or vulnerable communities.
  • Represent the organization at conferences, workshops, and public hearings to share expertise and enhance professional networks.
  • Review and interpret Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) and Environmental Assessments (EA) for technical accuracy and regulatory compliance.
  • Develop communication materials, including press releases, blog posts, and social media content, to translate complex policy issues for a broader audience.
  • Collaborate with legal counsel to understand the legal ramifications of environmental policies and ensure the defensibility of policy positions.
  • Facilitate internal and external meetings to foster discussion, build consensus, and drive progress on key policy initiatives.
  • Support grant writing and fundraising efforts by providing subject matter expertise and contributing to the development of project proposals.
  • Analyze energy markets, renewable energy technologies, and carbon pricing mechanisms to inform climate and energy policy development.

  • Quantitative & Data Analysis: Proficiency in statistical analysis and data manipulation using tools like Excel, R, Python, or Stata to model policy impacts.
  • Technical Writing: Exceptional ability to author clear, concise, and persuasive technical reports, policy briefs, and formal comments.
