Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Expertly set up, program, and operate a diverse range of CNC and manual machine tools, including multi-axis mills, lathes, surface grinders, and EDM machines, to produce high-precision components.
  • Interpret complex engineering blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) specifications to determine machining requirements.
  • Perform intricate machining operations on a variety of materials, such as stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, tool steels, and engineering plastics, while holding extremely tight tolerances.
  • Conduct first-piece, in-process, and final inspections of machined parts using precision measuring instruments like micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges, and CMM systems.
  • Execute advanced troubleshooting and diagnostic analysis on complex manufacturing equipment, identifying root causes of mechanical failures and implementing effective, lasting repairs.
  • Fabricate new or replacement parts for industrial machinery from scratch, often reverse-engineering worn or broken components when no drawings are available.
  • Develop and execute robust preventive and predictive maintenance routines on all shop equipment to ensure optimal performance and minimize unplanned downtime.
  • Collaborate directly with engineers and design teams to provide input on design for manufacturability (DFM) and assist in the development of new prototypes and custom tooling.
  • Perform precision assembly and fitting of mechanical components, ensuring proper alignment, clearance, and functionality of repaired or newly built equipment.
  • Utilize CAD/CAM software (such as Mastercam, SolidWorks, or Fusion 360) to create or modify toolpaths and machining programs for efficient part production.
  • Maintain meticulous documentation of all work performed, including repair logs, setup sheets, inspection reports, and program revisions, in accordance with company standards.
  • Select appropriate cutting tools, speeds, and feeds for various materials and machining operations to optimize surface finish, cycle time, and tool life.
  • Manage and maintain an organized inventory of raw materials, tooling, and shop supplies to ensure readiness for planned and unplanned work.
  • Perform light fabrication tasks, including welding (TIG/MIG), brazing, and soldering, to support comprehensive equipment repair and modification projects.
  • Adhere to and champion all company safety policies and procedures, maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work environment (5S principles).
  • Conduct rigorous testing and validation of repaired machinery to confirm it meets all operational specifications and safety standards before returning to production.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and training to junior machinists, apprentices, and machine operators on best practices and new techniques.
  • Participate actively in continuous improvement initiatives, suggesting and implementing process enhancements to boost quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Disassemble and reassemble complex mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems as part of the repair and overhaul process.
  • Calibrate machinery and equipment to ensure it operates within specified parameters, making precise adjustments as needed.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide fabrication and modification support for engineering projects, R&D initiatives, and rapid prototyping efforts.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of shop procedures, safety protocols, and machining best practices.
  • Partner with maintenance and engineering teams to develop and implement robust preventive maintenance schedules for critical machinery.
  • Actively participate in team meetings, safety briefings, and project planning sessions to ensure alignment and operational excellence.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • CNC Machining & Programming: Proficiency with setting up and operating CNC mills and lathes; experience with controls like Fanuc, Haas, Mazak, or Siemens is a plus.
  • Manual Machining: Mastery of conventional lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, and drill presses.
  • Blueprint Reading & GD&T: Deep understanding of engineering drawings, symbols, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Precision Measurement: Skilled use of calipers, micrometers, indicators, height gauges, and coordinate measuring machines (CMM).
  • CAD/CAM Software: Experience with software such as Mastercam, SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or AutoCAD for design and toolpath generation.
  • Equipment Troubleshooting & Repair: Strong mechanical aptitude for diagnosing and repairing complex industrial machinery.
  • Material Properties: In-depth knowledge of the machinability and characteristics of various metals and plastics.
  • Welding and Fabrication: Competency in TIG, MIG, and stick welding for repair and fabrication purposes.
  • Shop Mathematics: Strong command of trigonometry and geometry for calculating dimensions, angles, and toolpaths.
  • Tooling Selection: Expertise in choosing the correct cutting tools, inserts, and work-holding devices for any given job.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Experience developing and executing PM schedules for machine tools and production equipment.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED combined with a completed formal apprenticeship program or a technical certificate in Machining Technology.

Preferred Education:

Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Machine Tool Technology, Manufacturing Technology, or a related field.
